Huger possible assistants

Post by Globetrotter »

Obviously Downey makes a ton of sense and maybe Ragland and Reece.

A couple assistants that might make sense from Miami.

Director of Operations at Miami

Mike Gilliam current assistant at FIU, was head coach at Longwood when Huger was there

Interesting in that Gilliam was ALSO at BG with Larranaga, for one year. Will be VERY important to get a staff together and "re-recruit" some of the players who are rumored to be leaving. Not sure if these kids were actually released from LOI's, and if they were could we get them back, assuming we still want them. As to possible transfers, same deal. Are they still here, do they want to stay w/ new coach(es) etc.

So still a heck of a lot of questions to be answered. :-k

Give me any staff with Coach Downey and two others. If I can be real picky, let it happen quickly please!

I didn't notice that. I would think dependent on pay and if he likes FIU he would be a surefire candidate for the top assistant job if Downey isn't in the mix.

Might be beating a dead horse, but why not Dave Clarke, Head Coach of Owens CC? He had more D1 kids sign today, granted it is Austin Peay, the guy has won and produced at the JUCO level for a few years now, was on staff the last time Bowling Green won a regular season MAC championship, and he had a kid (James Kelly) I assume Huger recruited that went down to the U..

Not going to happen. Anthony wants to roam the high school sidelines as the head coach and terrorize officials. You won't be seeing him at the college level anytime soon (except when he is sitting in the Anderson Club or Jack seats at the Stroh)

Stacey didn't enjoy his short time as an assitant coach with Toledo. Too much time commitment.

This is a dream but what about bringing Steve Merfeld home? Coach Merfeld was most recently a head coach at Evansville and won a 2/15 NCAA Tournament game before that at Hampton (over Iowa St, I believe??).

He's been the "Special Assistant to the Head Coach" for Gregg McDermott (Doug's father) at Creighton the past couple of years. Very likely while the Evansville buyout money wraps up but I dont know that for sure.

Coach Merf would have been around BG at a similar time to Coach Huger if not here with him. Coach Larranaga would be the common bond. He would bring a WEALTH of knowledge and head coaching experience to the bench.

BG now offers pretty high pay for assistants now. I'd like to see him get at least 1 ex head coach from some collegiate level. From there, recruiters, recruiters, recruiters.

Merfeld would be great. Associate Head Coach Geno Ford sounds pretty good as well. Someone with MAC experience from his staff like Jaden Uken would also work.
