Holmes looking like a pro...
Holmes had a successful tourney at Portsmouth in front of NBA scouts and is now listed as the #8 upperclassman for the 2015 draft. Perhaps Richaun projects as Harrison Barnes type of player. I never met Richaun, but he always struck me as a rather focused and heady kid, so I'm not too surprised to see him continue rising.

Re: Holmes looking like a pro...
The impression I have is that Holmes works very hard. He strikes me as having above average basketball IQ as well. Couple those things with his athletic ability and the intensity he brings on defense, and I think he could find his way eventually onto an NBA roster as a role player.
It seems to me a guy like Holmes would fit right in with the NBA playoffs style of play we're seeing at this time of year. Maybe he would be a D league or Euro player for a year or two, then work his way onto a roster. Either way, I think he has a fighting chance of playing at the highest level.

Re: Holmes looking like a pro...
Draft express has him going at #45 to the Celtics...he's definitely moving up. One thing that may have changed the outlook for him is his measurables. We listed him at 6-8". At Portsmouth he measured at 6-8.5 in bare feet. That makes him 6-10" or so on the floor. He has a 7-1" wingspan...add that to a 34" standing vert and he begins to look less like the tweener PF/SF he was listed at a more like a four that can defend the basket.
I had him pegged as a Euro player...love to see him exceed that.

It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

Harrison Barnes is a solid 3. I like Richaun quite a bit but he doesn't have the frame or feet for a 3. I see him more as a stretch four. Two different players but I could see him in a Tristan Thompson type role or a Draymond Green type role.

The nba is full of diverse bodies and players. Holmes can shoot, is an elite help side defender a very good face up defender and has an extremely under developed face up offensive game.

I was surprised that his standing vertical was only 34". I would've guessed closer to 38" or 40".
When Antonio Daniels came out, he was initially projected as a late 1st rounder, but his stock continued to rise with each camp. Perhaps Holmes can have the same kind of assent. He's capable of improving his SF skills, and he has good poise.

Nothing shabby about 34" but his is definitely better.BleedOrange wrote:I was surprised that his standing vertical was only 34". I would've guessed closer to 38" or 40".

Re: Holmes looking like a pro...
I would think with his shot blocking ability and ability to move well on defense will give him a shot at getting drafted as a second round guy. In today's NBA with so many teams utilizing a stretch 4 or even a stretch 5 he should be able to guard guys in certain rotations. His offense would need to improve for sure, but I'm sure he would put in the necessary work on that end. If nothing else I hope he plays in Europe or the D-League. He simply was so great to watch. I only wish Coach Orr wouldn't have had him splitting minutes with Cameron Black at one point when seemingly every stat and analytic was saying Holmes should have been getting more minutes.
Re: Holmes looking like a pro...
If a player is good enough in the DLeague, he will end up getting an opportunity. I'm also a Dayton Flyers fan, and a couple players have gone the DLeague route (Chris Johnson and Chris Wright) and both have gotten their shares of 10-day contracts and after a couple have gotten contracts through the end of the year. Brian Roberts went a different route and went to Europe for a couple of years and has now played a role as a backup PG for a few seasons.
There's obviously a few ways to go about getting into the NBA. Getting put in the right situation is huge. If he can fill a role on a team, he definitely has an opportunity even if he has to go the DLeague route. If he can maintain that ~40% from 3pt (albeit small sample size), he has an opportunity to stick somewhere.

Looking more and more like Holmes will indeed get drafted.
At the very least its almost assured he gets into a camp somewhere as a free agent.

5 blocks in his first 5 on 5 game.

I really wonder if he is not the kind of player who might be even better as not the best player on his team.

Richaun Holmes really standing out so far. Great size, length, athleticism. Closing out well. Blocking shots. Offensive rebounds. Impressive

Not surprised by Richaun Holmes at all. I knew he had impressive tools, legit sleeper w/ lenght and upside. Impossible not to like him.

Re: Holmes looking like a pro...
I would actually describe Holmes as the player Chris Wright never developed into. Same height and weight. Holmes has a post game, a nice touch from 15-18 feet and is much better defensively.CBD2032 wrote:If a player is good enough in the DLeague, he will end up getting an opportunity. Worthington Summer League
Globetrotter,
At one time, there was a summer league in Worthington that would have college players and some NBA players. Any idea if they still play ball?

Fran Fraschilla praised Holmes during the scrimmage broadcast on ESPN2 after he made a block.
This is tremendous for Richaun and a great thing to emphasize to every single player we're currently recruiting.

He had nine blocks in 41 minutes of PT at the combine....he defended the rim like a boss holding the other guys to 3-14 shooting at the rim. I think he's almost certain to get drafted.

This still pisses me off when I think about it. Orr had no clue about how to use talent. Oglesby was in the same situation - splitting time with a far inferior Cameron Black.BGSUFalcon0409 wrote:....
