Went to see Caldwell play last night v beaver creek. My thoughts need to have an asterisk because we are so early in the season and his team won by like thirty and was up like 30-6 to start the game.
Overall: His team is loaded and he wouldn't have even been noticeable if I wasn't there to watch him. The best player on the team is either a 6-5 very thick Dayton recruit Trey Landers who will be an Anthony Stacey type forward or a Sophomore who may end up being the best hs player I've ever seen, L'Christian "Blue" Smith. That's saying a lot too. He's a star football player who has offers from Kentucky for football but is expected from what I have read to end up at Osu. He was probably the most athletic 6-5 guy I've ever seen in person. And a sophomore. They have another guy going to Findlay. So of there rotation we have 4 guys atleast going on to play basketball if they want to at the next level.
As for Caldwell, while I said he was unnoticeable I don't mean to say he played poorly. There wasn't a deficiency in his game that I noticed. But here was only one real highlight. Well start there. I think he is one of the fastest players I've seen. If you have seen there videos of the Greek freak getting down the floor in three dribbles, Caldwell has that feeling to him. And he's under 6-0 while the Greek freak is 6-9. He just seems to fly. He will fit in very nicely to our up tempo offense. He also had above average quickness.
The rest of his game was good but not spectacular. He handled he ball fine but had a much poorer athlete guarding him. He wasn't a distributor at all and they didn't really run he offense through him as much as I expected. They didn't not do it but as a D1 pg recruit I expected him to dominate the ball and he didn't. He took I think four shots when I was there and none went in. None were bad shots, his form looks ok and he did attack the basket on one.
Defensively he was active and quick but he was playin g much poorer athletes. Another area that I think was good but not great. His athleticism will help him here while his lack of height will be a hindrance.
Overall I think he will be a very good second of next year and can eventually be a solid starter. He didn't strike me as a stud distributor or scorer from the pg position but I think he's a very good athlete who will end up being a very good defender and ok offensive point guard. He plays on a team with great aggressive defense and tray will shine through. Also he is used to playing with talent which I honk is helpful as well.

I LOVE the speed aspect. It's great to have at least one small, super fast guy that can shred defenses. Every MAC team that has succeeded in the NCAA tournament has had one of these types of players. Sounds like his ballhandling and shooting will be there. I like that fact that he's already surrounded by D1 talent.
I'll never forget watching BG's super-fast Darrell McLane tear apart Kentucky in Rupp Arena. His speed dominated the entire game.

I watched him play in the state tourney last year, I'm sure the Warriors will be back again, he and the rest of his team looked like the real deal. Wayne is turning into a true public school power.
