Turner & Uju redshirt

Post by gmartin »

Michael Huger today stated that Turner & Uju will redshirt this year. Smart move. Why waste the season on only 9 games remaining. Get them ready for next year. Now we need to see Caldwell and Malik with more minutes and less minutes or Denny and Ali.

It was in a tweet to one of the sports editors. I'm sure there will be a story in The Sentinel or The Blade sometime today.

He said they will "likely" redshirt and the Sentinel Tribune sports editor tweeted it.

Unfortunately that is probably what's for the best at this point. NO sense burning a year of eligibility for both guys on a last ditch effort to make tournament noise. Unfortunately doing that also pretty much cements the fact that this season is virtually over. A roster very thin on bigs to start the season ends up losing one of them for the year.

On the plus side, hopefully shutting them down allows them to fully recover from those injuries going into next season where we have a recruiting class that looks to hopefully fill some of our holes.

Not sure what motivated him to bail...but Mayleben sat for years and then left before the one season he would have played significant minutes.

Odd how that worked out...
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

It would certainly make sense to do it at this point. And I'm glad Huger finally touched on the issue, even though it was pretty obvious.

I was thinking the same thing the other day. It kind of reminded me of what happened with the football team at CB a couple years ago. We looked pretty set at CB and McKoy (listed as a backup at the time) announced he was transferring. Just days later we lost a CB with a season-ending injury and then had another CB suspended and we went from being solid at CB to really hurting at the spot very quickly. McKoy would have filled one of the spots, but instead we were out 3 CB's just like that. Not exactly the same situation as hoops, but yeah, Mayleban certainly would have been in line for more minutes.

Yep. Mayleben was awful, and we actually joked how long he could go without falling down when he hit the court,. But with the injury to Uju and, really even with Uju, we were so desperate for big bodies we really could have used him this year.

I don't know how much production we would have gotten but he would have been in line for 10-15 mpg, and would have allowed us to play Worrell & Wiggins together some which I still think could be a legit high quality MAC front line.

Which actually begs the question...when we're in the MAC tourney and there is no tomorrow, I wonder if we'll trot them out there together some. Just once I'd like to see Caldwell-Frye-Alcegaire-Worrell-Wiggins on the court together...

I'm with you, I think we could be better and more effective playing Wiggins and Worrell together. But being we are so thin in the post, we clearly look to be avoiding it.

Great news! Hopefully they can get healthy and make an impact the next couple of years.
