When I stepped foot on BG's campus for the first time ever back in 1993 on a college visit, I sought out the basketball arena, which was Anderson Arena at the time. I entered the facility from the Southwest entrance, went straight up the steps to the upper level behind the south basket, and stood at the railing where the upper south level bleachers would have pulled out. I looked around the arena and noticed all the banners hanging from the ceiling - there were tons of them. But as I starting looking for men's NCAA Tournament banners, the most recent one I could find was 1968. I thought to myself I must have overlooked some, but after looking and looking, I realized it had been 25 years since BG's last appearance. Well, that was 24 years ago and as BG has fallen short of the NCAA Tournament yet again and can't end the streak for another year, we have now reached the half century mark - 50 "falcon" years...
....unfalconbelievable....

I think we are trying to beat Cleveland's 52 year streak. lol.

Gonna make it look closer down the stretch than what it was in the 2nd half.

By my count this is the 49th year of the drought. Am I missing something?

When I entered Anderson as a student in '87 I felt the program was relevent nationally yet on the outside. Sometime during the Dackich II era the program lost all relevance. My hope is that steadily the program will climb out of the abyss it so comfortably resided and start making noise again. Soon, very soon, the road schedule needs to improve with major schools on the schedule and the best mid-majors will schedule home and home with BG. Until that begins the drought will likely continue.

Northern Kentucky, in its first years of D1 is going dancing. They won the Horizon league championship in its first year.

It isn't good. But It could be worse.

Schad started a list about 10 years ago of teams that have had longer NCAA droughts than BG. It has been pared down from about 18 teams to 10 going into this season and Northwestern looks to be a lock to come off this year:

Columbia: Division I since 1948. Last appeared in 1968. 11-16, 5th place in Ivy League this season, only top 4 make Ivy League tournament
Tennessee Tech: Division I since 1956. Last appeared in 1963. 12-20, lost in opening round of the OVC tourney this year.
Maine: Division I since 1962. 7-25, lost in quarters of American East tourney
New Hampshire: Division I since 1962. 20-12, lost in semis of American East tourney
Dartmouth: Division I since 1948. Last appeared in 1959. 7-20, last place in Ivy League
Army: Division I since 1948. 13-19, lost in quarters of Patriot League tourney
Citadel: Division I since 1948. 12-21, lost in quarters of Southern Conference tourney
Northwestern: Division I since 1948. 21-10, considered a lock for the Big Dance going into B-10 tourney
St. Francis (N.Y.): Division I since 1948. 4-27, didn't qualify for Northeast Conference tourney
William & Mary: Division I since 1948. 17-14, lost in CAA semifinal

It's currently 49 years, but it'll be a minimum of 50 years because the drought can't end until next season. BG's last NCAA Tournament appearance came in 1968 of the 1967-68 season. Next year will be the 2017-18 season and year 2018 of the tournament. It'll be 50 years apart. The earliest BG could end the streak is next year which makes it 50 years. As hard as it is to imagine, let's hypothetically say BG were to win the MAC Tournament next year, ESPN's cute little sports ticker would be scrolling at the bottom of the screen saying "Bowling Green's first NCAA appearance in 50 years." Now everyone, snap out of it, it's not gonna happen...

It was a heck of a season, but the list remains. These are the nine Division I schools that have been on the NCAA tournament schneid as long or longer than Bowling Green. None of these schools will make the tournament this year, either.

Well, it was a very, very good season, but with the MAC tournament canceled, the drought continues. To my knowledge, only nine Division I schools have failed to qualify for the NCAA tournament for as long or longer than Bowling Green.

And bg nearly won that game -- one point loss I think it was -- most every tv -many of them black and white - in town was on and watching that barn burner ---

And I must be the only guy on this site who actually saw it live. Guess being 80 has its “ perks”

I didn’t see the last one because we didn’t have a tv in the jungle, but I did see the one before, in person, (the year we beat Loyola) and they WON the National Championship!
