Coaching staff

Post by Globetrotter »

It seems pretty obvious that despite what we see in this staff there are some pretty huge positives.

Turner could have left and came back
Plowden could have left and came back
We signed 2 transfer players who were the leading scorers on their team
We had a very good recruiting class last year

There are positives. He's not Orr or Dakich v2.0

HE's the first coach we've had here since Dakich v1.0 that actually recruits MAC caliber starting guards. Orr didn't recruit a single guard that I wanted to see on the floor. Dakich 2.0 had Ronnie Lewis and a whole lot of Floyds, etc.

I do think it is a good sign that while the rest of the MAC is losing some of their best players Huger got Turner and Plowden to both return for 5th seasons...that's very impressive. Pulling in some transfers looks nice now, but until I actually see them play in the MAC I'll withhold judgement.

Personally, I'm not against using the portal to fill out a roster. Every team up and down college hoops does it now. It seems like either this staff didn't recruit HS talent this past year or they're having a philosophy change wanting to do more with the portal. Either way, I'm not against it as long as the kids can play.

I still think we have massive holes on the roster, but we have a couple slots so I hope they actually fill those out. We need more 6'7+ athletes. I don't are about polish or post game, we need big athletes. If they can get some boards, get some blocks, and be a dunk option they'll fit fine. We don't have a replacement for Plowden lined up, and we really don't even have anybody that can play his game when he needs a breather. And of course Swingle shouldn't ever see the court.

Our coaching staff has massive issues. Due to those issues I really don't think this is the group to ever get us to the tourney. But they do have some positives, and it's been enough to have us at least in the conversation as the best team in the MAC at various times over the last 3 years. Unfortunately, being in that conversation means nothing if you cannot consistently gameprep and win 3 straight games that are giving their all to beat you.

Chandler Turner and Dylan Swingle were both named to the Academic All-MAC teams this morning.
