Huger post game quotes…John Wooden He Ain’t !!!
I decided to go back through the game recaps and select o few post game quotes from Huger. I was amazed at how similar they were from the early losses to the recent ones.
“We knew what they were going to do”
“We need to be tougher”
“We need to learn to defend”
“We weren’t able to defend the way we are capable”
These consistent admissions to Me point to one of three things:
1. Huger is incapable of recruiting players who can play at this level OR
2. Huger is incapable of developing players into better players OR
3. Huger is incapable of motivating players to put in the effort needed night in and night out to be successful.
One thing is clear: The responsibility is Michael Huger’s and if he is back as the head coach next year, I as an Anderson Club ticket holder will not.
I would be interested to hear the input from others regarding this dribble.
We stopped defending. We didn't defend the way we should have. They were able to get everything they wanted from three's to drives to everything.
We'll bounce back, I'm not worried about the bounce back. It just takes away a great effort on what we did with just some key mistakes, mental mistakes that we made down the stretch. Those things hurt us and that was the difference in the game. We have to regroup, be prepared and come out ready to go."
They played really well. They were tougher than us and the tougher team won."
We were not the tougher team from the start. That's the difference in the game. You have to be the tougher team when you play teams like this. You have to be able to sit down and guard. We weren't aggressive enough. It's just the difference in the game. We have to bring it every night and bring it for 40 minutes."
(Toledo game in which they gave up 91 points. "We did a good job preparing for them." That quote alone after a loss like that should be grounds for firing!)
We did a good job of preparing for them. We hung tough in the first half, but it's a game of two halves. We didn't do what we needed to do in the second half in order to win the game."
Our guys have to understand and know that we have to compete. We just didn't compete. [Bryan Trimble Jr.] wound up getting 33 on us. No matter what you try, if you don't play hard enough it's hard to win."
They beat us in every category. They were tougher than us in every category. That's the game. We knew what they were going to do, we knew they were driving the ball. We just have to be able to stop that. We knew they were going to rebound the ball. We had to be tougher to stop that and we weren't."
The biggest thing, we weren't able to defend the way we're capable of defending. We were more worried about playing than we were defending." ( What the f#*k does that last sentence even mean??!!)

It beats a shoulder shrug and an it’s God’s will, but not by much. Lou Orr is probably rooting for Huger to lose…to replace him as the losingest coach. However Pat Haley’s 4-21 season still stands tall in the annals of Falcon Futility
Re: Huger post game quotes…John Wooden He Ain’t !!!
That record will stand as long as Huger is allowed to schedule like he did this year. Otherwise, next year could be in play for worst ever with the roster returning. If you think Huger is stubborn about 2 fouls in the first half, I can only imagine how he will treat the transfer portal after Reece and Gordon were scapegoated. It might be off limits now. Those non conference opponents this year all look worse than they did when BG played them. Thanks again Bob and Kit.

All Huger needs to say postgame is "I'm sorry...when it comes to actually coaching a basketball team, I'm clueless" mic drop...exit stage right
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

I saw Van Wright at a girls HS basketball tournament game last night in Wapakoneta. I should've asked him what's up with the the Falcons basketball program.

Thanks for the correction, I guessed. I lived through it, but was too lazy to actually look it up. I got to main campus in the fall of 1970.

Re: Huger post game quotes…John Wooden He Ain’t !!!
New to the board. Class of 2005, but have been watching BG Hoops since I was a kid. Read the board for years and finally got an account approved. Not sure what took so long but oh well. Either way here are my thoughts:… sorry if it’s long winded, just excited to do my first post. My father always told me to be FAIR when judging others so I’ll TRY to do the same here..
1. I think Huger tries to be political in his pressers. He doesn’t want to be too bold and tries to keep things simple. Could he be more open and honest with what he says? Yes. But coaches are criticized left and right no matter what. Even though I don’t like it, I can understand his approach … “don’t say anything the players can hold against you” … “Keep things in house”…Still want more blunt responses but can understand. He has always told us fans to come to practice whenever we want. I wonder if he would give more info behind the camera and mic? — Anyone ever go to practice and can answer this?
2. I do think Huger has brought in some really good MAC Talent. To me his recruiting has been his best quality. Turner (all time leading scorer), Frye (all time 3pt), Wiggins (1000pt, 1000reb), Plowden (Top 8 in points, Top 4 in reb and block shots), Lillard (1,000 points), Diggs ??? (top 10 3pt as a role player). Metheny, Fulcher, Turner and Frye made all rookie teams. I don’t think recruiting is bad. What we do with that talent isn’t always appealing to the eye, but the talent and development has all been positive…. Now maybe it’s not Huger developing them??? We all know Coach Stacey recruited and worked with Turner. Frye credited a lot to Coach Summey. Plowden credits a lot to Coach Noon. I don’t know the current players quite as well but those to me have been our three best players in Huger tenure and all three credited a different assistant for their development.
3. Agree the extension shouldn’t have happened. But it is how this business works. They probably had to do it for recruiting purposes at the time. I think admin was prob handcuffed.
4. Huger inherited an AWFUL situation after Jan’s. Not sure how the academic progress ratings (APR) works but If I remember correctly BG had the lowest in the NATION when Jan’s left. Kingston spoke to a lot of us about that. I believe he said it’s a 4 year rolling average which means Huger WAS handcuffed with roster management for at least 4 years. Again, need to fact check this but if it is true that’s a big thing.
5. I do think not having Metheny and Fields all season probably cost BG 5 games. Two veteran BG guys who have won in the MAC before. Both your point guards too. I would like to see this team WITH those guys. Would the season be perfect, No. But would it be better, Yes.
6. For all the complaining we do about Huger, at the end of the day, he went to a Championship game in 2019. Had a chance to win the regular season in 2020 when Dylan Frye stepped away then the tourney got canceled. Justin Turner hurts his hamstring for the 4th time in the final 5 seconds of the 2021 regular season ultimately costing the team any chance in Cleveland. Not ALL of that is on Coach. Whether we like someone or not, not ALL the blame is on him. Some or a lot? Sure. But not all. But that’s just one man’s opinion. I do think there’s some bad luck there too.
7. I don’t love our style of play. It drives me nuts sometimes. When I watch games, I see Huger managing substitutions, offense, defense and timeouts… yes he’s the head coach, but shouldn’t he be letting his staff do some of the work? I remember watching Thad Matta allow his assistant handle timeouts. I see other MAC coaches allow their assistants to handle substitutions. Hell other MAC schools have assistants that are play calling. It seems like Huger is trying to handle EVERYTHING! Is that what they did with Larranaga at Miami? … this may be my biggest complaint I have. You can’t drive the car, text, pick a radio station and look at the GPS all at the same time. To me that’s what he’s trying to do.
So here is my question…If he delegated some of those things, would he be more successful?

I don’t think practice is open. When I went to buy season tickets, I asked if I could go in to pick the section and row that I wanted. I was told I couldn’t go in because the team was practicing.

Jans was only here for one year. BGSU was above the 930 APR threshold for that season and the next four after that. The program was not under any academic penalties before or after Jans . You can look it up. https://web3.ncaa.org/aprsearch/aprsearch
I think football is the only program to get penalized at BGSU for APR issues...Brandon cost them something like 10 scholarships one year

Correct! Jans was here one year and didn’t leave the program in a mess. It was unfortunate he had to be fired but the program wasn’t as bad as the football program after Jinks.Flipper wrote: ↑Sat Feb 26, 2022 8:51 pm Jans was only here for one year. Thanks for sharing that link. When you search 2014-2015 (Jans only year) and click on “Bowling Green” it shows Jans only year he was an 863 APR which means Huger was left with that on HIS 4 year APR average. If I remember correctly there were 7-8 guys who left when he was fired. That doesn’t cause any penalties but if 930 is the average they need to keep, that would certainly keep Huger from ditching any inherited baggage.
