This is exactly why students and fans SHOULD NOT run out onto the floor.

On the 1470 The Ticket yesterday afternoon, Dakich said that Fitch would NOT play at CMU.

Gosh, this is terrible. He has worked so hard to get back out there.
Let's hope it isn't a long term thing.
Those of you in BG, keep us posted, please!

At the radio show last night Dan said Fitch had a bone bruise. He will probably not play Wednesday, but should be fine for Saturday. It is unfortunant, but it will keep continueing to happen until the Athletic Department decides to do something about it.

I saw it happen - a pretty good-sized guy jumped on Fitch's back from behind - he must not have been expecting it because his legs buckled and he hit the floor. I'd love to see if the AD does something about this...

Not when your coach encourages the students.

I loved seeing the horde of students descend upon the floor after the buzzer went off. Dakich loves the enthusiasm from our student body (when they show up).

But c'mon - you don't jump on one of your own guys.

(Obviously a TU student upset with the outcome who decided to rush the floor and take out one of our players so that he would not be ready to go for the rematch).

Before we get flamed, the last quote is, I assume, a joke.

Its one thing to encourage the fans to cheer, be excited, make noise. I never saw him encourage them to head to the floor. Fact is, its going to be really, really hard to stop on that floor.

No Stopping them

You are correct. It would be impossible to stop a determined group of kids from getting on the floor at Andersen Arena. Short of arresting everyone they can get their hands on to prevent it for the "next time," the administration / police are pretty much at the students mercy on this one.

For some reason, at BG (unlike any other school I am aware of) no one seems to care if people are all over the floor after basketball (or football) games. Heck, at the Doyt, it is typical to see kids playing football out on the field in the south endzone after each game.

This is a shame. I really hope we can bounce back and play again soon. I can't think of another player anywhere that has had as much to overcome in terms of injuries like Fitch has.

Never assume, but you are correct!

BGSU can do something about the students rushing the court if they want to. All they need to do is show some force. You want to keep people off the court, line the court with police officers, sherriffs deputies, and highway patrol officers. Other institutions do it and students obey. Just let the students get cuffed and carted out once. Or let them feel a hit of pepper spray once. They'll get the idea really fast. The big question is: Are you ready to listen to the students complain about the consequences for not taking responsibility for their behavior?

On the "keep the kids off the floor issue" If anyone has ever been to an OHSAA game at Anderson Arena, I had the privelage to be on the bench for a couple, they will note much higher measures taken to keep fans/students off of the court.

Elsasser and whatever student worker they can get, run a yellow rope the length of the East sidelines and I think they may even require all fans to be one row up or at least NOT on the floor. Now I don't think they shoudl do away with front row seating, but how about running that rope?

I've wondered if that was more of a liability issue with high school aged kids or if the rope would actually seem more inviting for college kids to jump over.

I don't know, it was just nice seeing the students show some support for the team :?

If you take the students off the court your getting rid of a tradition. Out of how many times the court was rushed was there a player injured? It sucks, yes, but it was also a freak accident. Fitch will be back, it's a bruise, not a tear.

It's a bone bruise...that's a bit more serious than a soft tissue bruise

This situation is not just isolated in BG. It is a problem at all colleges across the nation. It's the mentality of the fan thinking they are an actual member of the team. The fan thinks they have a right to be on the court, to touch the players and such. A ticket does not grant you that right. Watch the game, cheer your team, but stay the hell away from them at the end of the game. This is what I am beginning to hate most about sports today-the line that separates fans from teams is now blurred giving everybody the perceived right that they can do whatever they want at an event.

And don't pin this on Elsasser, either. He cannot go out a purchase common sense for everybody who buys a ticket.
