On Tuesday, January 23, our Falcons (14-4, 5-1 MAC) host Kent State (9-9, 2-4 MAC) in what is shaping up to be a huge game at the Stroh Center. The game will begin at 7:00pm, and will likely be available to stream on ESPN+.

The history doesn't mean as much, given our roster turnover and the we now have Marcus Hill and Todd Simon. This is the year trends end. If EJay Greer develops into the weapon we think he can, look tf out!!!

I am feeling confident this game will go in the Falcons favor.

I am sensing the program is ahead of schedule a bit with creating a new culture. I like what Simon said in his post game press conference after the Western game. When talking about rebounding he said "It's more of a culture stat to me because that tells me that you're willing to do the hard stuff on every possession because it's hard. I've got a guy taking a 20-foot head start and he's going to smash right into my back at a high rate of speed, and I've got to stand there and make sure that the resistance is great, then go get it with two hands, and then I've got to run 94 feet and try to score as fast as I can.....That's our culture"

If you dive into the stats a bit further, a few things stand out to me that reinforce what we're seeing on the floor and what Simon has said about being aggressive and attacking. We are #2 in MAC games in total rebounds [5 total rebounds shy of #1 Western]. FYI, Kent is #11 in rebounding in MAC games. We are #1 in MAC in total rebounds factoring all games played. I also see we are #1 in the MAC in Free Throw Attempts in both total games played and the 6 conference only games [by a pretty wide margin]. This ranks us #44 in the nation among DI teams in this stat. We sure attack the rim! Just like Simon promised. If we improve our FT shooting %, there is a great opportunity to add some much needed hidden points each game as we finish out the season. Last, we are #3 in the MAC in opponent FT attempts. I think this says we are pretty disciplined on defense compared to other MAC teams.

Our team is confident while Kent is reeling at 2-4 with a home rivalry loss. If we can be aggressive early and establish a lead I'm hopeful we can control this game for 40 minutes. Still feels weird saying that

To me, this game will definitely show whether he is the man for us. This is a game all recent coaches would lose.

I think that might be a step past where I am.

It’s absolutely a big game and a chance to really turn the narrative, but if we lose a hard fought battle, it doesn’t deter me from thinking he’s going to eventually get us back to the dance. I don’t think it can be all or nothing this early in a guy’s tenure, ya know?

One game shouldn't be the barometer as to whether a coach is right for a program or not. Wins and losses can happen for myriad of reasons, many of them outside the control of what the coaches (and even players do). The game tonight is simply a good measuring stick for the current roster against a well-established program in the conference.

You can judge Simon on the summation of his tenure a couple years from now.

Holy s**t! If only we had graded Michael Huger to this standard we wouldn’t have needed to waste the previous two seasons on Jim Elsasser’s son playing D1 basketball. Simon is a really good coach win or lose. He has Bowling Green basketball headed places win or lose. A win would be awesome. A loss would have Bowling Green in 3rd place in the MAC. I’m all for raising the standards around here, but let’s not put Duke standards on a program run in the ground by incompetence and a Con Man for so many years.

Without the Elsasser slander (I knew the guy when I was a student and he couldn't have been a nicer, better representative of BG, so I am biased), I agree with guest. We are 14-4. Simon has already showed he is the man for us, and we'll be lucky to keep him for more than 2 years.

This is the most important game of the season IMO. Kent is down from recent standards. We are home. We are favored. I think we're the better team, and much credit for that goes to Simon. This is a game we should win. But it is Kent State, one of the three programs in the league we can never seem to get over the hump against in recent years.

But with recent coaches, the teams would lose games like this.

No, I don't think this is any sort of referendum game for Simon. I like what he's done here so far and I think he can certainly return us to prominence in the league. I am not saying at all that a loss here would mean he should be replaced or anything like that...just that it would be a huge disappointment...a disappointment we've become all to accustom to around here. I am tired of those disappointments!
