MAC SEMIFINALS vs. Kent State (3/15)

Post by mbenecke »

Following the thrilling victory over Central Michigan, our Falcons (20-12, 10-8 MAC) will be playing in the NAC Semifinals on Friday night against the Kent State Golden Flashes (16-16, 8-10 MAC). They beat us 90-84 in OT in our only matchup this year, so I expect this to be another real battle. Hoping the guys get some rest and get ready for another postseason game.

5:00pm on CBSSN. Akron vs. Ohio will follow on the same channel.

Let’s go Falcons!

Has anyone seen anything about Chris Payton Jr.? It looks like the last game he played was on February 27th.

BG racked up 51 rebounds today v CMU. 28 rebounds for Central. 19 Free Throw attempts for BG. 6 for Central. We carried out the plan that Simon talked about this Monday during his weekly appearance on the Falcon Coaches Show. Attack the rim and finish through contact. Gotta be more of the same v Kent. I know the officials are letting the physical play happen, but we can't shy away. Stick to the plan. If so, we will have the opportunity for some wide open outside looks to knock down.

Other than the year in which BG lost to Buffalo in the finals, did our previous coach win any games in the MAC tournament?

My memory probably isn't good but I'm having a hard time remembering any success in the tournament under Huger (or Orr).

Louis Orr was 3-7 in the MAC tournament.

Chris Jans was 1-1.

Michael Huger was 4-5.

Well there weren't many wins. You were right on 2019 (2 wins before losing to Buffalo) but there were a few more. In 2016 Huger and BG won 2 games in the MAC Tourney. Orr won one game in both 2009 and 2011. Not a sterling record regardless.

Huger won twice as the 12 seed before losing a good battle against Akron. Jans was stuck with the terrible format where the top 2 teams had 3 or 4 byes.

Already excited for the game tomorrow. Agee is a beast and hill will be better. I assume we'll be a Vegas underdog but very winnable game

Yeah Huger started fooling some of us (me included) by making a good tournament run in a pretty poor season (was that his year2?). Then we did make the run to the championship game that we lost against UB. Those 2 seasons were the only time he ever won games. Also one of those wins (and probably both of Orr's wins) were home sites, not in Cleveland. Those wins always felt cheap to count as "tournament" wins.

Watching OSU since Holtmann was fired, I think my feeling that Jake Diebler will end up being a pretty good coach is still alive. I do not expect OSU to keep him as it's very rare for an interim with no prior head coaching experience to get a job like that -- but if there are some mid-major openings, and especially in the MAC (he played his high school ball at Upper Sandusky), I could see him successfully getting one. He's been a very solid recruiter (more than solid, actually) and has shown to be a pretty good floor coach as well.

It's past time for BG to stop losing so often to Kent in basketball.

A BG win streak starts tomorrow.

Definitely. Time to avenge the OT loss during the season. I'm old enough to be in AARP and BG has not made it to the dance in my lifetime. I truly believe it would have happened in 2020. BG was the best MAC team. It will happen this year. Ay Ziggy Zoomba!

I had no expectations coming into the tournament. And yet, now I'm sitting here anxious with another 8 hours til tip.

March can be cruel, and it usually is. But maybe... just maybe...

My org's SVP happens to be in town today and asked if I could meet at 5pm today, right at tip. There's part of my that's almost relieved that I don't have to go through the stress of watching, and another part that's tempted to be like "Sorry, I know you're my boss's boss's boss but I have a game to watch."

Attended more games than any responsible student should have.

R U ready for early retirement. If not I would not suggest the latter.
