Next Year’s Roster
Agee and Spurgin were both asked about exercising their final year at BG next season. Both were noncommittal. BG “could” return all but one player for next year, which would be huge. But, we could also be picking up the pieces and trying to put a roster back together all over again as well. This is the state of college athletics we now live in. It’s also the harsh reality of the importance of winning while you have what you have. If you’re good, you need to win while you’re good. You can’t bank on “next year” anymore. Because it can all be gone in one off-season. The notion of building a program has taken a dramatic turn. It’s more about assembling a team each season than it is building a program. Those days are somewhat gone. As for what we have next season, we wait and see…
GO BG!!!

Re: Next Year’s Roster
Maybe we bump this thread to talk about our exits and inbound players. I don't think Greer is a huge loss. Hate saying that as I'm sure a fantastic kid. Purely from roster building standpoint it was evident that Simon saw him as a role player early on. Maybe a starter as he matured.

Greer was a great athlete with great height....he wasn't a terrible basketball player. You could see him developing to an absolute star or never being anything. One of the lowest floors and highest ceilings I can remember here. I am hopeful he is back but as HammB can attest we are incredibly active in the portal already.Hdog wrote: ↑Thu Mar 21, 2024 5:58 pm Maybe we bump this thread to talk about our exits and inbound players. Verbal Commits lists Squire as a SR next year. He will be a Sophomore

Re: Next Year’s Roster
We'll see how Pardon's game translates as a freshman or if he needs a year or two to develop.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that Squire shot 40% from 3pt this season in juco. Judging by his numbers, that must be the majority of his game. Hardly any free throws, not a ton of rebounds, but over 120 3pt attempts. That could work well here if he is in good physical condition. If he's not, I think he'll struggle a ton.

Agee is in the portal. Huge loss. Gonna have to add more than just shooting now.

Apparently we are in play with a double-double machine Juco transfer, so I’m guessing this was expected.

Agee is from Chicago and DePaul just hired a new coach. Something to watch there.

Greer had I’m already in the portal body language the whole year. With the success Shumate had at Toledo and the Kampe’s Hillsdale transfer single handedly beating UK night can we see if Findlay has a guy that can shoot? How many more games does BG win this year with the Hillsdale/Oakland guy?

Already in contact with several shooters including a D2 guy from Walsh. Agee leaving forces the style change Simon originally planned to play.

Re: Next Year’s Roster
I wouldn’t mind having Sam Towns back for another year. I think he’s a little more natural athlete for this system, and he’s got good length. At minimum, great big depth.

Ya I have no feel on Towns. I think he could improve even more in Simon’s system to help with a pro career. Especially with a full year healthy. I thought Spurgin looked more like we anticipated in the CIT game with Agee out. He passed pretty well in that game. I think less back to the basket is on the horizon either way.

Re: Next Year’s Roster
I'm not real enamored with the profile Squire brings. I've never seen him play, and I just generally am opposed to 6'11 that doesn't rebound.
BUT
If Spurgin returns as a true 5, having somebody else to be the perimeter big may be better. Spurgin COULD shoot, but he was a better inside the paint player than he was on the perimeter. He just had to play on the perimeter because Agee is a pure interior guy. Don't get me wrong, I'd welcome Agee back with wide open arms but it was always a question of how they would fit together.
We obviously need to add shooting. We will have to replace Agee's attitude and toughness in the paint. But as pointed out above, guys like Goehlke are out there every year. The key to being a successful coach (especially at the MAC level) is now becoming finding those gems, convincing them to come here, then getting the group to gel in their first season. Then rinse/repeat

Re: Next Year’s Roster
We need to find some 24 year old shooters out of DII. But honestly, UK and other big schools will rethink its approach. Why sign a freshman when you can get experienced players right away and win immediately.
That zone Oakland was playing was intense.
