I sat with an old friend at a high school basketball game this weekend who has a grandson playing major D1 college basketball. He told me that players are now negotiating minutes into their NIL contracts with schools. I don't think this effects us but he said that players will demand a certain amount of minutes for the year (i.e. 600 minutes for the season). He went on to explain that since these players know they are guaranteed minutes, they don't practice hard and they will sit out of drills whenever they want... Just the reality of things nowadays, I guess.

At some point, this will swing the other way when teams stop bending over backwards for mediocre or largely unproven players.

Will they though? That's up to the collectives and the donors. Maybe when they stop seeing return on investment, but I'm still skeptical. Obviously playing time stuff is on coaches, etc, but it's not their money so they don't much care about that. Now the playing time stuff can be a cancer to team success so I can see that part going away, but the money is just going to keep growing, imo.

At major conference teams these NIL deals that sound absurd to us are pocket change, in the grand scheme.

Where it will likely hurt is it's less money to the administration and facilities as donors are now channeling ey directly to players through NIL collectives. I'm no longer donating $10m to get my name on the court, I can buy a guaranteed NCAA tournament roster with that same money.

Very well said. It’s why I continue to only donate to the school itself. BG helped me tremendously get to where I am today in my career, not the basketball team. I hope more folks take this approach

You will see schools start recruiting more international players. Players cannot collect NIL with a student visa.

Jesus, if that's the state of college basketball, I have zero interest.
