Been some online rumblings/a story in the Detroit News speculating Todd Simon as a possible candidate for the WMU opening. Kalamazoo is opening a new downtown events center in 2027 which will host WMU hockey and basketball. Their Bronco Athletic Fund has really paid dividends in regards to increasing coaching salaries and improving program resources across the board there. Something to keep an eye on, despite my inclinations Todd's not going anywhere.

EMU hired Billy Donlon as their next head coach. He's currently an assistant at Clemson, but has been the head coach at Wright State (2010-2016) and UMKC (2019-2022).

That's a really good hire. He did very well with a very under resourced Wright State before being unceremoniously shown the door, and then was having a nice turnaround at UMKC before heading to Clemson to work under Brownell (who he worked for at Wright State).

So if Simon stays, what players do not enter the portal? My thoughts:
1. Pardon
2. Spurgin
3. Leach
4. Karel
I do not think Shackleford, Squire, Goins, Wol and Kimbrough stick around. They go search for the big bucks.

Of that group they will work hardest to try to bring Shackelford back in my opinion. Wol out the door will be likely from both sides.

Shacklford gets my vote as for the Javontae Campbell treatment. Pony up to keep a key player in the hope he can step up. There's more game in that kid than we saw this yr, I think.
Pardon and spurgin have no options, they're not d1 talent. Karel is probably closer to their level than he is a rotational player.
Goins is a guy I don't want to see more of but when used as he was this yr could give us some good minutes. He's not making big money elsewhere either.
I'd like to keep Leach around just to keep nurturing a local kid who clearly has some game.
Of that group they will work hardest to try to bring Shackelford back in my opinion. Wol out the door will be likely from both sides.

Has a sitting MAC men’s basketball coach ever left for another MAC job willingly? That would seem pretty crazy, but I guess we are in changing times…

Charlie Coles coached Miami forever - then coached I believe Central for another forever.
Took our lunch money at both places, too.
Not sure if he went directly from one to the other.

Coles coached at Central Michigan late 80s to early 90s, spent a few years between at Toledo Central Catholic in the early 90’s before landing at Miami for like 15 or so years after that.

Thanks for the correction. I got the schools right, at least.

Something of note, Simon’s top assistant at SUU, Flynn Clayman, is the head coach of High Point, who just upset Wisconsin.

Utah State job is open.
Todd was seemingly a real candidate there 2 years ago, as was Tod K up north. Could be a very important opening this cycle.
