Is there a regulation somewhere saying they couldn't hand out thundersticks to the games at Anderson like they do at the Doyt for football? This would be very interesting if we could have thundersticks at Anderson, man could you imagine how loud we could be then?

I see that fans at NBA games have them. Why not us? :-\

I believe NCAA prohibits artificial noise makers in BB arenas. I think I read that in another thread

This is just my personal oppion, but I HATE Thundersticks!! I think they are annoying and a pain in the @$$. However that is just me. I know for whatever reason everyone else loves them. I hate them. Never use them. If the NCAA sez they can't be used in BBall games, great. Now all I have to deal with them is at football and hockey games.

Technically they are against NCAA regulations at ALL sporting events, I'm pretty sure. I remember reading awhile ago that the artificial noisemaker rule for sure covers football, because some fans were upset about how it affected their right to have cowbells at the games. Obviously its an unenforced rule, so its really pointless.

Well how about them big slinky like things that you put in the air and wobble back and forth, that would be good behind the baskets....

Exactly right PGY and here's the NCAA rule.
http://www1.ncaa.org/membership/governa ... clocknoise
Regarding artificial noisemakers, Rule 10-3.5 of the 2003 Men’s and Women’s Basketball Rules and Interpretations states on page BR-122 that “the playing of musical instruments and/or amplified music and the use of artificial noisemakers while the game is in progress shall be prohibited,” along with the clarification that the only time that a game is not “in progress” after it has started is during a timeout or during intermission. A penalty for violation of this rule is an indirect technical foul. Please be aware that an artificial noisemaker is interpreted as being any object that is used to manufacture noise by contact with another object or surface. Nothing prohibits schools from distributing or selling such items to fans; however, if they do so and those fans with the items choose to use them as artificial noisemakers at times other than during timeouts or intermissions (something that would be very difficult for game management to control), they could be charged with an indirect technical foul under Rule 10-3.5. Member schools that advance to the NCAA championship tournament in any division should be mindful that restrictions on artificial noisemakers are more strict for those games than they are for the regular season. Possession and/or the use of artificial noisemakers is prohibited at all times during NCAA tournament games.

So what if we bang the hell out of them during timeouts and intermission, then just as someone's lining up to shoot a free throw, pull them out and ACT like we're (uh, you're, I haven't been to a game since November) going to make noise again, but stay silent. Would THAT be a violation?

Here's what I found on a NCAA site,
Pages 129-131, Rules 10-5 and 10-6 cover artificial noise makers and amplified music. Neither of these items may be used while the game is in progress. Rule 10-5.1.a states that the only time the game, once started, is not "in progress" is during a timeout or intermission.
Examples of violations of this rule:
1. Banging a drum when a free throw is made.
2. Playing amplified music as teams are setting up to shoot free throws or any other time when the game is in progress.
3. Cheerleaders banging their megaphones with their hands or banging the megaphones on the floor.
A warning shall be given to the team whose followers are using these artificial noise makers. Game management should also be notified to deter this activity from continuing. If it does continue, an indirect technical foul shall be assessed.
4. FalconBoy Bringing thundersticks

Wait, so there's a warning involved? Well then, if we can just keep everyone from using them until that crucial free throw with seconds remaining....

You know, I've been thinking about this for a while and I've come up with this scenario that describes why they don't allow thundersticks in Anderson Arena.
Give some thundersticks to some plastered Kegs & Eggs guys or some drunk Sideline Squadders. Now give UT the ball on an inbounds pass from the sideline right in front of these groups in a tight game with less than 2 minutes to go. What do you think will happen?
Football and hockey are a bit different because there are the barriers between fans and players. That and the playes have protective padding on.
