Reason for the Nate Thurmond Article?

Post by Salsa »

Did anyone else wonder about the long Nate Thurmond article in the Blade popping up out of the blue? Maybe there is nothing to it, but then maybe there IS something to it.

Here's my totally wild, unsupported, hopeful speculation.

With the upcoming "Building Dreams" fundraising campaign, maybe Nate will serve as a co-chairman of some aspect of the campaign. You guessed it, co-chairman to raise funds for a new convocation center which will include a basketball arena. In the article, it pointed out that Nate made peanuts compared to today's NBA players. But adding his name to a fund raising campaign could provide a big boost.

Face it guys, I love Anderson Arena as much as the next fan. But BG can't move up in the basketball world without a new arena.

I'm hoping, hoping, hoping!!! We need it now, now, now!!!

President Ribeau has said he wants a new convocation center for commencements and other evets. I'd like to see a center with 10,000 capacity.

Are there any basketball Bob Sebos? I'll even take a corporate sponsor who wants naming privileges like Marathon Oil, Cooper Tire, or Huntington Bank or Skybank. I'll even take Wood County Hospital Arena or Newlove Realty Arena. I know it desperation, but I'll even take funds from the Ohio Legislature. What about Randy what's his name? Isn't he a Falcon fan?

Personally, I think 7-8K is plenty for a new arena. We don't fill 4,700 as it is.

The perfect situation would be 5,000 good seats with an option to add more if ever needed.

I think we all agree with need a better arena. Where some of us disagree is whether or not we need a *new* one.

After 573 threads on the matter, that might sum it up best.

As for the Thurmond article, I wonder how much of it had to do with renewed interest in Nate's career spurned on by a few folks in here.... I know it took me some creative thinking and Googling to find out about Big Nate's BBQ in the first place. Oh well. It was a pretty solid article, and anything that brings attention to BG is a good thing, especially out of that paper.

That was a great article on Nate. My dad graduated from BG in '64 and he always talks about those teams....with Thurmond, Jimmy Darrow, Butch Komives. I printed the article for him to read.

FWIW pdt,
I think Grant has a little inside info. that I'd LOVE to get through a PM...Sounds like a certain BG alum/father of current BG student may have something to do with future arenas?

The man in question sold Moulton Gas in December so I doubt that will be the name on any new buildings. Not saying he is not involved, because I guess he most certainly is involved with all developments in the athletic office.
