NCAA Tourny Suggestion

Post by Anonymous »

Everyone complains about teams on the bubble not getting into the tournament or how some teams in the tourny dont deserve it.

Well I got a suggestion. Increase the number of teams to 80. We already have a "play-in game" between the 64 and 65 team, so how about we make the field 80 teams. The top 48 teams go directly to the first round, where the remaining 32 teams play in the opening round "play in game". Those winners then will make up the 10-13 seeds in the tournament (which are usually most bubbles teams). These games could be played on Tuesday, just like the game was last night, at a neutral site.

You always seem to have about 8 or 10 bubble teams each year, which would mean your selecting 64 teams from about a field of 75. Bringing the field to 80 would pretty much guarantee all bubble teams a shot to make the tournament. What do you think????

I think that until you include EVERYONE (which ironically would only take one weekend, a weekend that's used up by conference tournaments anyway), that there will always be bubble teams. Of course #81 has no real reason to bitch about being left out, but why does #66 have that same right? The only real answer would be to use the conference tournaments as the "first rounds", and have no at large teams. "March Madness" would be about a 25 team tournament made up of only conference tournament winners... And how much fun would that be?

Honestly, I like it how it is now. I like to feel as though we earned something by simply making it to the big dance. Of course the major programs don't get that same feeling of accomplishment since they can go .500 and still get in, but we cannot. I like knowing that when BG does break their long draught they will have accomplished something truly special.

By allowing more teams into the tournament you simply cheapen the hard work it took to get there.

I don't think the field should be expanded.

About one school in five now gets in ( 65 / 329 = .1976 ).

That's about right. It's like making the Major League Baseball playoffs. It means something.

If 80 teams were taken, people would just carp about the 81st-85th choices that got left out.

Agree. I've heard all kinds of suggestions about adding teams and play in games. All you do is move the bubble. We just have to grow up and admit to ourselves that the world isn't always fair.
