Final Recruiting Push

I feel that what happens with recruiting in the final few weeks until signing day could be crucial. If Coach is lucky (you know he's working like crazy), it could set the stage for a real advance in BG's fortunes.

I say this because everybody seems to feel that the 4 signees we already have look very good. Could the addition of a top prospect (or two) make the difference?

After watching several of the NCAA tourney games, what I'd like to see is the addition of at least one guard who could play the 1 or 2 slot, who is really quick, can penetrate, and can shoot well. Look, for example, at the two guards at Texas Tech. What a pair!!

I think that with what we have coming back, especially Vandermeer and then Solwer (sp?) and LeFeld along with our incoming recruits, our front line could be pretty good. Let's hope that Vandermeer and LeFeld really progress.

By the way, in terms of physical propertions and style of play, Vandermeer looks an awful lot like a young Bogut of Utah.

Anyway, I'm thinking that signing a really good final recruit, especially a guard, could make the difference. If we sign two more recruits, maybe the best deal would be to sign a good guard and a good rebounder at the 3 or 4 position. Good luck coach.

I like the idea of two JUCO guys who provide instant maturity, to go with the returning players and four freshmen. One more freshmen, I think, will delay any turnaround for another year. Also, it leaves a huge graduating class down the road--assuming no red shirts, and no one leaves :?

We simply don't have any leadership seniors coming up. This is the hidden price for the empty recruiting classes over the past few years. Take a look at this.

Right now, here are the Classes.

06 Fitch (??), Soler, Wright (??)
07 Wright (??), Floyd, Montgomery, Lefeld
08 Vandermeer, Robinson, Freeman
09 This year's Freshmen

If we can put two JUCO guys in the 07 Class, it gets a little better all of a sudden.

Lastly, I doubt if any immediate impact guys are still out there.

You make some good points, but this is SO not true. Yes many of the best players sign in the early signing period, but there are also a lot of players that were undecided at the time or wanted to wait for other reasons.

There is also, I'm sure, a group of kids who had good senior seasons and were maybe not seen as great prospects before, but have now been elevated to be worthy of a scholarship offer from us.

Insiders currently has us in on a number of guards that could prove to be immediate impact players for us. The names to watch are Michael Hall, Marcus Frye, and Quanatez Robinson. We are also in on a Center (Phil DeVries). All of these guys show interest in us, but no scholarship offers from us. I'm not sure if they're incredibly out of date or what. With the season being a downtime in recruiting news I have to believe that they are just out of date with their news. I did some googling on Robinson this past week and he is still uncommitted as of early March, and he seems very promising. He is coming from a prep school that finished the season 41-0. Don't know much about the other guys, but they're all listed as ** recruits, and those types of guys can generally have an early impact in the MAC.

I see where you're coming from in regards to future losses to graduation, but I'm not a big fan of JuCo guys. You get them and they still aren't much more likely than a true frosh to make an immediate impact, plus you get them for less time. In the end I'm not sure there is much benefit short term OR long term.
