The office UALR game thread
Never to early to talk about the coming basketball season. Looks like UALR has an out of conference game with you guys. I would like to know a little about your returning team and the expectations for the season.
UALR returns Steve Shields as head coach in his 3rd year. He is coming off back to back Eastern Division Championships of the Sun Belt Conference and was coach of the year in his 1st season as head coach. Steve is a great coach that has won with teams that had little talent but a lot of heart.
UALR returns only 3 players from last years team that saw the court last year, having lost 7 seniors.
Point Guard: we have only one true point guard on the roster and he a red shirt freshmen. Our best all around player, Jr. Zack Wright, will end up playing point. Zack should be a 2nd or 3rd team all conference guard. He can shoot the ball enough to make people play honest. He gets to the basket and draws fouls easily.
Wings: Sr. Elijah Muldrow is a defensive stopper and will be joined at the wing with one of the many juco’s we signed in the off season.
Post: Two Freshmen and two jucos will play up front for UALR this year. UALR has been out manned up front for the last to years but the new bigs should own the boards against most non bcs teams. UALR’s new juco bigs are 6’8” 225 lbs juco all American that averaged 15 points and 15 rebounds and 6’7” 250 lbs banger. The back ups will be a red shirt Freshmen and a true Freshmen that both fell to UALR after being hurt in there last year of high school.
I am hoping for a .500 year with all of the new faces. Lets hear a little about what you guys have for next year.
Feel free to drop by the UALR message board www.littlerocktrojans.com where the hot topic is the 22 million dollar arena opening next year.

A Junior guard and a Sophomore center transferred, the center is the bigger loss of the two but not catasrophic, recruiting went exceptionally well. I believe we had a top 50 class, maybe higher I don't quite remember. Others on the board know quite a bit more than I would about the incoming recruits. The largest loss was 3 seniors graduating, two of which started and were the top two scorers. We do get back explosive senior guard Steven Wright though, and he has a great transition jump shot, is a good passer, and can jump out of the gym.

former_d1, here's what I can pull off the top of my head regarding our team.
Seniors
Steve Wright -- Senior -- 1,2 -- 6'3" -- averaged about 11 per game, solid athlete that has good explosion to the rim and has been good for us in his two seasons. He'll be listed as a senior but if he graduates on time (which he is on pace to do) he'll get another year of eligibility.
Mawel Soler -- Senior -- 3,4 -- 6'5" -- he is a JUCO transfer from Coffeyville CC and is a hustle player to say the least. He is on the floor quite a few times a game and brings a lot of energy when he enters. Doesn't shoot much but is good around the bucket and get really elevate.
Matt Lefeld -- Junior -- 5 -- is a 6'11" kid who hasn't played many minutes in his two seasons. Our 6'11" freshman (Scott Vandermeer) came in and grabbed his would-be minutes but has transferred to Illinois-Chicago. Matt is about 260 pounds and uses his weight well put doesn't have great tough, allow it has improved dramatically over time.
Perrick "Moon" Robinson -- Sophomore -- 1 -- 5'9" -- Moon is a point-guard from Chicago who played well at times last year. Also is not a shooter but is a very athletic, ballhandler that has good upside.
Patrick Phillips, Alvin Freeman -- walk-ons
INCOMING PLAYERS:
Martin Semarco -- Junior -- 2 guard -- 6'2" -- transferring in from JUCO in Detroit. He was an All-American last season averaging better than 21 a game. He brings some instant scoring and a good threat from the outside.
Lionel Sullivan -- Freshman -- 4 -- 6'7" -- big guy from Detroit that was named All-Catholic League and All-State. Will be a big help on the glass and in the paint in general. Strong guy that was in the Top 50 in the state of Michigan.
Dusan Radeukouvich (sp. not close) -- Freshman -- 2,3,4 -- 6'6" -- Comes to BGSU from Serbia and is a lights out shooter. Played on one of the national team for Serbia and may turn out to be a great steal for us.
Erick Marschall, Nick Wilson, Jeremy Holland, Darryl Clements -- Freshman
We have seven kids coming in right now and one more scholarship to give out. We were rated by Hoopscoop Magazine #34 in national recruiting.
We lose three four year players in John Reimold, Josh Almanson and Cory Eyink. Eyink was the ultimate team player and did everything possible to win. Reimold averaged 18.5 points per game (1st in MAC) and was named 2nd team All-MAC and Mid-Major All-American. Josh Almanson averaged 17 per game and was named 1st team All-MAC.
We've lost 5 guys from last years team but they are being replaced by some very good talent. We'll be very young and pretty inexperienced but we certainly have excellent talent and if we're able to come together, we have a chance to be a very excellent ballclub.

I'd feel better about him if Dakich forgot about him, and he stayed on the benchMetz wrote:Everyone forgets about John Floyd...maybe if the opposing players start to, hammb will start to say he's a good PG.orangeandbrown wrote:Contact, did you leave John Floyd off by accident, or is he not expected back?
And BasketballContact, I'm suprised you can't spell Radivojevic right!
I don't hate him, I just don't think he's good.Flipper wrote:Opie hater...
I actually really like John Floyd...as a role player who plays a few minutes here and there. The guy plays with a ton of heart and intensity. I love to see that in a player. I just don't think he's talented enough to be a starting D1 PG. He's a poor ball handler, not athletic enough to defend a good PG, doesn't see the court exceptionally well, and is not an instinctive passer. That's on top of a very poor shooting percentage anywhere but the foul line.
Its very tough to dislike a player like Floyd, because he is absolutely giving his all on the court. I just don't think he has the talent for his all to be anything but mediocre.

Tell you what....
He's alot better than ole #5 from a while back, can't even remember his name anymore.
I think Floyd can be very good for us. He just needs a little more time to adjust to our offense. He has shown he can get the job done , and yes he's not very athletic or quick or fast but I think he'll get better. But I wouldn't be surprised if this one 6'4 pg freshman comes in and starts over him.

orangeandbrown, I certainly did forget to include St. John's graduate and Oakland Golden Grizzlie transfer, John Floyd...my bad, I was typing fast and straight up left him out.
Falconboy, I think you're referring to Jabari Mattox as #5. He left during his senior season after having big trouble with his knee and seeing a big drop in his minutes.
Dusan's name is spelled...
R-A-D-I-V-O-J-E-V-I-C
Players and coaches thus far usually just call him "Deuce"

The shots Floyd hit during the Toledo comeback more than makeup for his shortcomings. He was getting everything to drop in the second half, he provided a real spark in that game. I wish we wouldn't openly rip individual players on the board. Everyone here would agree BGSU wins or loses as a team, so I figure a fan site should keep it positive when it comes to the individuals on that team.
