NCAA Bans Indian Mascots from tournaments:

However, large blue phallic symbols are still ok.
(I posted this under hoops since that is where this has the most effect)

LB,
Worse yet...the
Audabon Society has lodged a protest against using the names of BIRDS as mascots...hence, such team names as Eagles, Blue Hens, RedHawks, Cardinals and (gasp!)
Falcons...will have to be changed to more "politically correct" and acceptable names.
And there is a STRONG possiblility that organizations who oppose cruelty to animals might just be right behind.... Oh well, at least a school named after a "poisoness nut" will probably be safe...as will the Akron Zips (but no Kangaroo!), KSU Flashes (I'll leave that one alone).

If they ban the bird names, that's just getting out of hand. What are they going to call us, the Bowling Green Normals? This is just getting ridiculous!

I don't think we could be the normals either, that might offend anyone classified in the DSM-IV as ab(by) normal.

This only effects postseason tournament play for the NCAAs, so it wouldn't effect our men's team anyways...
Sorry, couldn't help myself

Metz,
Hopefully, you didn't take my previous post seriously...just my weird sense of humor kicking in I guess..... but nothing would surprise me any more re: our sense of "political correctness" in this country...It seems, as my sister pointed out the other day, that we've lost the ability to laugh at ourselves...just a bit.... No more Polish Jokes, no more Indian names etc.

And how truly sad that really is.
Lighten up....life is too short to get "offended" all the time.

I think we need to make a distinction between political correctness and aversion to racial/tribal mascots. Anyone who knows me knows that I'm not a fan of political correctness, but having tribes/races of people as mascots is offensive. The reason why some take offense to native american mascots is because native americans were discriminated against (to say the least) and driven to reservations. Now, we want to "honor" them by using them as mascots? Certainly, we should understand why this might upset people. Political correctness is spelling women W-O-M-Y-N (women without the 'men') or being afraid to criticize certain minority groups. Using racial groups as mascots is ridiculous and saying so doesn't make one politically correct.
Also, we should avoid smokescreens such as asking "why not ban animal mascots so PETA doesn't get offended?" or "shouldn't cowboys be offended by being used as mascots?" I hope we all have enough sense to realize that these aren't comparable to using native americans as mascots.

Cowboys should also be banned as mascots. After all, cowboys and Native Americans had many skirmishes with the cowboys killing many Native Americans. Should the murder of many Native Americans be glorified?

Good post. One can be disgusted by PC, as am I, and still understand the problem with certain mascots. And I doubt that anybody is taking the nuts from PETA seriously.
Here's another distinction to consider. The Chief Wahoo caricature and the team name "Redskins" are clearly demeaning. Should those usages be considered in the same light as when Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, or Illinois name themselves after specific tribes in their regions and portray those tribes with dignified images? Can the use of "Chippewas" be an acknowledgement and reminder of an important part of our history?

I have to say that your post basically is how I feel as well. Bleed Orange added good thoughts as well. I do think that the Redskins and Chief Wahoo are worse than the tribe names like the Chippewas. Also, I believe some tribes are linked to the schools and have said they are proud of their assocation--but that doesn't mean they speak for the entire tribe.
There is also a difference in how it is done. CMU has no mascot, so there's no offensive warrior image. Florida State cannot say the same thing.
I understand things like this can go too far, but I think that time is running out on this practice. Imagine if you tried to do the same thing with an African or Hispanic image.

Are you meaning to tell me that my dream of seeing the Florida State "Wetbacks" isn't going to happen?
That was wrong - very wrong. Can you guess the purpose, though?

Nonsense. There are cowboys today and that isn't what they do. Members of every profession and every race have killed others (and animals kill too).
