hoopfactor.com on BG recruiting Ryan Sims

Ryan Sims Update -- Ft Wayne guard Ryan Sims has a chance to be a very, very good D-1 player. Potential on this kid is unlimited given his freakish athleticism. Several schools backed off of Sims because he didn't play as hard as they would've liked during the recruiting period in July -- but like I said, he has skills. We heard Kent State offered last month (probably pulled now that they've offered Rod Sherman out of Ben Davis in Indy). The latest on some sites has Sims looking hard at Akron and Bowling Green.

I don't care how "freakish" he is athletically, if the kid doesn't play hard how long does anyone think he'll last under DD?

Maybe he'd at least make it through the first practice

I do not want BG to recruit anymore players from Indiana.

Hmmm, we already lost Vandy, because his Dad wanted him to play closer, and now Jeremy Holland has left the team to go back to IUPUI, and Austin Montgomery went to back to Indiana.

Ok, in 2 years 3 players have left, one before the season even began after renigging on his national letter of intent. Just curious???? My brother told me since Holland signed a letter on intent, and was enrolled in summer classes, and it was posted on here that he attended at least 2 days of summer classes, and Dakich reported that on radio a while back, does Holland have to sit out this coming season???

But getting back to my statement. I could care less how good Ryan Sims is, he may get homesick and transfer after a year.

TG,

That article said he is going to REDSHIRT this year, that is different than the league forcing you to sit-out. We have football players redshirting this year but if called upon they could play. Anthony Turner was redshirted last year, but if needed he was able to play. So if that article is correct he does not need to sit out a season.

"...and will have four years of eligibility beginning in 2006-07."

You get five years to play four. While redshirting is uncommon in basketball (because of the limited number of players available), if they redshirt him this year, he still has four years of eligibility. But his eligibility for IUPUI doesn't start until NEXT fall. He'll practice with the team and all, but won't be able to play in games until November 2006.

But my point is, say 4 players get hurt this year and if they need a player, Holland could play this year, but then give up one year. I think he is allowed to play this year if they really need him. The players who sat out last year for BG, and when John Floyd transfered, they were not red-shirted. When Ron Lewis trasfered he had to sit out, not red-shirt. So basically what I am asking, since he was enrolled in summer classes before fall classes, does the NCAA require him to sit out a year, I am guessing no, because if that was the case, then he would only have 3 years of eligibility remaining, 4 if he was redshirted next year.

Okay, maybe I should have included the term "redshirt" at all, since it really ISN'T mentioned in the article. At least not what I read. It says, quoting again, that Holland "...will have four years of eligibility beginning in 2006-07."

His eligibility at IUPUI BEGINS in the 2006-07 season. He's ineligible this year. BUT... since you get four years to play five once you set foot on campus, any campus, his NCAA eligibility clock is starting. He CAN'T play this year due to transfer rules, but when his eligibility clock starts in 2006, he's still got four years to play four years.

No it says REDSHIRTED.

Jeremy Holland, a swingman from Austin, has enrolled at IUPUI and will have four years of eligibility beginning in 2006-07. Holland left Bowling Green prior to the start of the fall semester and will redshirt this year.

So I am guessing since he did not start the fall semester he is eligible to play this year, if he wanted too.

Wow. I read that three times and missed it every time.

In that case, they contradict themselves. He can't redshirt this year if his eligibility doesn't start until next year. I think it's all a matter of semantics, probably.

Thats why I was confused a little. I did not think you could red-shirt and be ineligible the same time. Oh well, he does not play for BG anymoe, getting back to my original statement. Lets just not recruit any other players from the state of Indiana, too many headaches.

Haven't checked out this forum in a while....been on football and hockey...sorry! You guys want the true "skinny" on Ryan?
Let Akron have him!!!!! I've seen him play on numerous occassions, he is one dimensional (he can put it through the hoop), however if that dimension happens to not be there on any given night, oh well, he goes through the motions. No D to speak of, moves to the hoop VERY predictable, and to make matters even worse, his dad is the head coach, so he can do NO wrong. Attitude is everything, so in this case, it is nothing. Don't get me wrong, nice quiet kid "off the court", just don't want/need him on the court.

With our current roster, I'm not seeing a need for this kid at all, especially if Wright gets a 4th year of eligibility.

Currently, we're in on Phil & Charles Tabot, both of whom are 6-8 and top 20 in MI. Also, we're in on 6-9, 230 Donald Lawson from Chicago, who is also highly rated.
