Tough loss, 56-50, but we battled
Tough loss to open the season. I like the way we battled after fighting back from nearly 20 down, as we pulled withing three with under a minute to go. But that was a problem we faced a lot last year, getting behind big early then trying to dig ourselves out of a big hole. That didn't work last year, and won't this year either.
I think Virginia Tech is going to smack us around on Saturday, they are pretty good and talented and will be playing at home. But I really hope we can at least beat Radford on Sunday before wrapping up the tournament. After that, we need to get healthy, and get some of those newcomers in good academic standings. We need everyone to get this thing going.

ROLL ALONG!
We were actually within 2 with a little over a minute to go, but Samarco got a T after his 3 that cut the deficit to 2. They made 1 FT, then we fouled AGAIN, and they made both to push it back up to 5. Great comeback by the guys, though.
2 things - 8 of 17 from the FT line will not cut it. I don't care how inexperienced or how large the deficit, 15 more fouls than the opponent is ridiculous.

Check the Blade out. Post-game practice was held, and the notion of any positives is called "ridiculous" by DD.

I want to know what kind of "celebration" Samarco did to merit a technical foul in a game down 2 with under 2 to go. Not knowing what he did, it seems like the ref had a whistle that was entirely too quick.orangeandbrown wrote:Check the Blade out. I want to know what this quote meant.....
"We've got to get somebody that's going to lead us in the right direction," Lefeld said. "We're all kind of running around and trying to hustle, but we've got to focus on one thing together as a team. And we didn't do that."

That was my 1st reaction upon reading that item too....is there now "excessive celebration" in basketball too? And I find it hard to believe that we could outscore a team from inside the paint AND take 25 or so FEWER FT's. Obviously, not being there it's easy to criticize or wonder...but sounds as if we got "homered" a bit.... on the other hand, I remember Robinson getting into foul trouble virtually every game last year too, so maybe at least that part of it wasn't far off of last year's results.
Education our Challenge, Excellence our goal. (look it up)
The problem is that most of our fouls are usually on the perimeter. Moon, Semarco, etc, were getting hit with a lot of fouls early last night.Class of 61 wrote:BG Grad.BGGrad01 wrote:I want to know what kind of "celebration" Samarco did to merit a technical foul in a game down 2 with under 2 to go. Now that's what I like to see from coaches. Maybe Dakich should have a meeting with coach Brandon about motivation and accountability.

I took this to mean they need a point guard. No leadership at this point. John Floyd is not the answer.I want to know what this quote meant.....

After seeing the box score, the big thing that jumped out at me was the difference in free throws. Holy cow! WCU was 27-42 and BG was just 8-17. There's the ball game, not to mention all the fouls. When you give up nearly 20 more points from the line to another team, you aren't going to win many games that way.
The good thing is, the wasn't a MAC game. And I'm not even going to think of a loss like this hurting our NCAA or NIT hopes this season. Postseason to me this year means what happens in the MAC Tournament. The only way I think we'll see postseason play is by winning the MAC Tournament, and we've never done that in the history of BG basketball, so there's no pressure there. I've seen some talk about this team posting 20 wins this season too. Can't see that either. But with how young we are, and now how depleted we are with two injuries and two academic setbacks, I can only hope these guys can learn, grow and gel in the non-conference portion of the schedule and come together by the time we hit MAC games. Then, anything could happen.

Floyd may not be the answer, but I would much rather have him out there than "Moon the fouling machine".Rollo83 wrote:I took this to mean they need a point guard. No leadership at this point. John Floyd is not the answer.I want to know what this quote meant.....

Well, they kind of had to practice afterwards since Dan only saw half of the game.Jacobs4Heisman wrote:orangeandbrown wrote:Check the Blade out. Post-game practice was held, and the notion of any positives is called "ridiculous" by DD.
