BG gets some ESPN2 love

I watched a few minutes of the OSU/VT game on ESPN2 last night and they talked a bunch about BG and the crazy win over VT. The announcers said that if they had replay, the basket wouldn't have counted. But then they went out of their way to say things like "I don't want to take anything away from BG" and "They went into a very tough gym and played a really hard, great game." They even showed the clip of the last tip in. It was nice to hear our name mentioned positively.
I didn't listen long enough for them to make the Ron Lewis connection. He scored ten points so I'm sure the connection was made eventually.

Lewis hit a big 3 with about 2 minutes to go to push the Buckeyes' lead up to 6 and they mentioned BG after he was intentionally fouled on a breakaway on the next possession.

WRONG! Watch the link. The ball is clearly off the defenders hand (and on its way in) before the clock expires (watch the red lights on the backboard). It doesn't go through before time expires, but that ball has clearly left the, ahem, "shooters" hand before the buzzer. That's a good basket! ACC schills!

The announcers said something about a rule that would have overridden the basket. Something about the shot has to be made by an intended shooter therefore the accidental tip-in would not count. I'm not sure if they were talking out their ass or if an actual rule like that does exist.

Oh sure, rely on the "rules."

I am no referee, but I do believe there is a rule to the effect that a basket only counts when that was the intended purposes of the ball going through the rim. That is, if a pass is made and the ball gets tipped in, technically, the referee could disallow the points. Or in this case, if the ball is tipped into the wrong basket, the referree could disallow the basket. FWIW, I have never seen this call made. If the ball goes through the basket, you get two points, or one or three (or four if it's the ABA).

My dad had mentioned something about that rule, that the ball has to go through the net on an "unintended" tip before the horn, but he didn't know if it was different in college or whatever. If that IS the rule, it's pretty silly, I think. I can't imagine any scenario where that would be logical. If it isn't touched after the buzzer and goes in... count it!

Perhaps that VT player MEANT to score for BG. That's what I think anyway. Yeah, let's go with that.
