Fouls, fouls, and more fouls.
I couldn't listen to the game last night because of horrific computer problems. Nevertheless, the box score from last night is truly fascinating. We lost decisively in every statistical category. I find myself wondering about much.
Bradley attempted a whopping 44 free throws and made 35. We committed 27 fouls. Lefeld committed 4 fouls in 19 minutes of play. Dusan had 3 in 11 minutes. Phillps had 3 in 7 minutes. Marschall committed 5 fouls in 18 minutes of playing time. We have a wide variety of guys (slow, fast, athletic, unathletic, young, veteran) committing a many fouls in few minutes. We've seen this in other games also. I tend to think that this is DD's failure. Our senior had 6 turnovers and 4 fouls in 26 minutes. He's been fouling and turning it over a lot this year. We're within our rights to expect just a little more discipline than that from our senior.
Wilson played 6 minutes last night. Does this mean that he won't be taking a redshirt this year? And if he isn't, would it pay to have him on the floor more often? Floyd played 28 minutes last night. If we're going to get beat by 30 while our most experience guard goes 2 for 8, why not get another one of our athletic freshman in the mix a little more? Could it possibly hurt?
We shot 38% and lost the rebound margin by 11.
Moon made three pointer. Hmmm.

Well it could be a long season if they quit now but I would like to see how they perform after Wright and Moten come aboard. I hope has the season goes this team will get better and become competitive night in and night out. Last years team started off great but ran out of gas, they were too thin and really didn't improve as the season went on. Young teams like Ohio U got better as the year progressed, lets hope we od the same (get better).
I have not seen Brian Moten play or any video on him at all. I can only go off of what we have all read and that is glowing headlines, however, he still is a freshman and 19-20 years old. I think we are expecting an awful lot from a kid who has yet to play college basketball to all of a sudden and come on board and be the savior of the program.
I'm not saying he won't be solid or good, but I wouldn't bank the season on him like some of you are expecting to see a miraculous turnaround as soon as he shows up.

I doubt if anyone is honestly thinking of Moten as a savior. I am hoping/anticipating that he can give us 20 minutes at a guard/wing position and, as a freshman, demonstrate good D1 talent. Suppose Moten could provide about 8 ppg? That + a healthy Wright can make a meaningful improvement in our competitiveness.commonsense wrote:Option QB
I couldnt agree more, A guy who hasnt played in a college game, or even practiced for that matter, is not going to be the savior.

Like I said earlier, I certainly DO NOT hope for this be the situation at all, but for those of us that have had fractures before, I certainly hope Steve is able to recover fully from that and play to his abilities rather than have to worry about it being a lingering injury all year. A basketball player and a recovering fracture to the foot area does not sound like an appealing combination.
Here's to Steve being able to come back at full strength. We're still a few weeks out on Moten, so it's not write off time yet, but let's give these guys a chance to become a part of the program first.

According to last year's NCAA Record Book, the national record for team fouls is 50 in a game, 966 in a season.San Diego Falcon wrote:Could we sent the NCAA record this year for team fouls per game (if there is such a record)?

The BG records are 38 and 687. Currently, we have 185 fouls through six games. I'd say 687 is in jeopardy.
As Dakich said last night, the problem was being "reactive" instead of "proactive", going back to the old saying that you "play defense with your feet". I'm sure some running and ball-busting in practice can get them in better position, even against more athletic teams.
"I don't believe I can name a coach, anywhere, anytime, anyhow, who did it better than Doyt Perry."

We're extremely thin in the post. We have one post player, and this is his first year of regular play. I've never seen any college team in this situation. In the summer, when I thought we'd have Holland, Sullivan, Marschall, and Lefeld, I was worried about post depth. Even if/when we shore up our other issues, we're still a severely crippled team because of this.OptionQB wrote:Defense is going to be a struggle all season. We have no intimidator like VanderMeer and we aren't athletic enough to play man or zone, so defense will continue to be a long, strange trip indeed.
