.......just looking for some help in explaining this quote from the Toledo Blade after BG's loss to WMU.

"I think my team probably got a little full of itself in terms of how it was going to guard, or how it had guarded, and maybe didn't pay attention to the game," BG coach Dan Dakich said.

It's amazing that our problems are always because the players don't play hard enough, aren't tough enough, or "don't pay attention to the game." We never address the offensive woes and lack of recruiting true scorers. Our point guard (who isn't known to score) had one-third of our measely total of 62. You can't expect to hold D-I teams under 60 pts. every time you take the floor in order to have a chance to win.

My interpretation: DD is saying that the team got cocky/overconfident about its defensive abilities after undressing CMU and therefore didn't bring needed intensity against Western.

Actually, I think that we have had our share of true scorers. We have true scorers on this team, too. What I'm not wild about is DD's offense. Never have been. Bad spacing. Bad ball reversal. Too much emphasis on finding the perfect shot. We too often sling up slop with 4 left on the shot clock when the perfect shot never materializes.

BleedOrange is dead-on with his analysis of the offense. The non-"motion" offense as it has been called from time to time. I would additionally add that the offense requires too much ballhandling from our guards as well, or at least too much decision-making.

Our fundamentals problems at this point are: rebouding, man-to-man defense and yes, rebounding.

With a schedule that looks like Northern, Toledo, @Eastern, @Muncie, Buffalo, @Kent, Akron, @Miami, Ohio, Eastern, @Toledo, @Akron and probably someone like Wright State in the Bracket Buster . . . Those trips to Ypsi, and Muncie are the least daunting, but there's not a lot of daylight left.

BTW Toledo with a loss to Akron last night is 0-3 in the MAC, but let's not gloat until NEXT Sunday, if we can.

I stand corrected BleedOrange.....we have had some true scorers, which vividly points out the problem, as you have so clearly identified it. It's important for a coach to have some offensive ability and an offensive mindset to understand how to teach it. Nobody would think of hiring a defensive lineman to be a quarterbacks coach in football.
