So I'm sitting in my Journalism 100 class today and in the row in front of me is Martin Samarco. About halfway through the class as the professor is talking about the class and stuff I look out the little window in the door and I see Coach Dakich standing right outside the door. He's eating a sandwhich and just staring in the classroom watching Samarco and making sure he was paying attention and being a good student I guess. I kept looking over and seeing Dakich taking bits of his sandwhich, chewing, and gazing into the classroom. I started to crack up, it was just a real funny looking scene. Coach finally left after about 5 minutes. I think it was the highlight of my Tuesday. Hahahaha Coach is a funny guy.

Ok, journalism student...you left out the most important detail of the encounter with DD in your report....

What kind of sammich was he eating? Was it a grinder? Was it on wheat or white? Was it from Subway? Does he chew with his mouth open?

Details!! We must have details!

That is a funny story, and I can so see Coach doing that too. I can just see him chewing away on that sandwhich.

I had a funny encounter with Coach Dakich a few years ago myself. When I was still living in Virginia, I always tried to see BG play some road game when they were somewhere in the area. So that year I went up to Pittsburgh with some friends to see BG play a game at Duquesne. BG won what turned out to be a very close game and funny enough, we sat in the stands with John Reimold and his dad (Reimold was sitting out the year after transferring). Anyway, after the game, my friends and I went over to the BG bus and talked to Keith McLeod who had a great game that night. Keith was very appreciative of our words, and as we walked away, Coach and Len Matela walked by us so we said "good game" to them and they said thanks and then Dakich started chatting with us. When he found out we came up from Virginia to see the game and that I was a BG grad, he called one of the managers over to him and he told him to go on the bus to get us some t-shirts or something. The manager got on the bus and you could see him looking around in there through the windows. He was taking a while looking for them, so Dakich said to us "I'll be right back." He stood on the steps of the bus and asked the manager what was taking so long, and the manager said they were all out of shirts. So Dakich shouts to Kevin Netter, who is sitting is his seat on the bus, "Netter, give me your shirt." Netter looked at him like he was kidding around, and Dakich said, "I said give me your shirt." Netter, looking confused, took off his shirt and handed it to Dakich and he tossed it to me and said "thanks for coming to the game and any time you need tickets at BG, you just let me know." So there was Netter, sitting there on the bus without a shirt on in the cold night of Pittsburgh. I felt bad for Netter having to give up the shirt off his back, literally, but it was cool of Coach to do that and it was just like something you could imagine him doing. Too funny......

If there is any truth in advertising I'm guessing it was a cheeseburger from CJ's Sports Bar.

I'll tell ya, it is thinking about stories like these that make me really sad when people demand that Dakich be fired because of a few bad games. For what people might say about him being an idiotic product of Bobby Knight, the man truly, truly cares about the University, the community, and more importantly, the academic integrity of his program. All too often I think people forget this aspect of running a collegiate basketball program. In many ways I am more proud of a team that works hard at academics than a team that wins championships. I know that people are going to belittle me and say that this is the kind of attitude that keeps programs and conferences at the "midmajor" level, but it is what I believe in. I am proud to be able to say to people that BGSU's basketball coach values education as much as I do.

I should say that my opinion isn't based on these stories alone. I have met Coach D. on numerous occassions, and although he comes off as a rough, hard-headed guy, I can tell you that he cares much more than he gets credit for. I also have confidence in his recruiting/coaching ability. We all saw what he did before the WVU situation, and no one can deny that we have struggled since. While we may have been better off on the court if we had hired someone else after he left, I don't believe that we would have been better off academically, and to me that is the bottom line. I am proud to say that Dan Dakich is my alma mater's basketball coach and I will remain so as long as he is here.

Well the sandwhich looked like it was just a regular 'ol sandwhich from one of the dining centers on campus. It was cut in half and was on wheat bread I think. And yes he chewed with his mouth open like he was totally zoned out. I'm no journalism major, its just a class I'm taking. By the end of the semester I should be a much better reporter though

OK, here is one my favorite Coach Dakich stories. I am working the MAC Tournament at the Gund a few years ago. My duties are to walk Coach Dakich, Keith McLeod and Len Metala from their locker room after the game to the media interview room. We had just knocked off Ball State in the semis and were headed to the championship game to meet Kent State. McLeod had something like 38 points and Metala had a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds. We are walking through the tunnel around the Gund and nobody is saying a word. Suddenly Coach turns to McLeod and Metala and says "You guys f&*king suck. I can't believe how f&*cking bad you played." For a moment there is dead silence again and then Keith and Lenny just start cracking up.

I totally agree. I just love the guy. His kids earn their degrees and there is no doubt BG should have been in the big dance at least twice on his watch.
He is a very valuable asset to BGSU and the community.

When I was a tour guide, we walked in on a practice in AA and this clown (Dakich) called the little brother of a prospective student over to the team and had him join the drills for a few minutes. Um, coach? How about working on actual skills with your PLAYERS instead of being all cutesy with little kids.

Now this guy is sitting around eating sandwiches and spying on his players when he could be recruiting or coming up with a game plan?

You don't see good coaches pull this kind of crap.

It's time for Dan asks Dan...about how much longer it takes for him to figure out that he's worthless.

Yeah! What the hell was Coach K doing filming that credit card commercial and behind the glory specials? He should have been actually coaching or recruiting during that time! What a bad coach!

We need inside players so badly, but coach is busy teaching his son to play ball.

The kid's like three feet tall. Maybe if he "plays hard and concentrates" he'll be able to bang around with Ohio's Leon Williams. Come on.

If you are criticizing a coach for spending some time with his children you are seriously misguided.
