Where in the world has our home court/field advantage gone?
After watching our football team finish 2-3 at the Doyt this year, and now seeing the men's basketball team fall to 4-4 at home (with two wins against non D-I teams) including a mark of 2-3 in the MAC at Anderson Arena, I've got to ask the question, "Where in the world has our home advantage gone?" It used to be walking into the Doyt or AA was an obstacle in itself, but now, teams are waltzing outta BG with win after win. It's almost like we roll over and play dead for stretches at home in hoops this year. If we're not blowing a 15-point lead and losing by one, we're digging ourselves a 17-to-20 point deficit and then storming back to come up only a few points short in the end. We have all seen how competitive this team can play this year, so there's no excuse anymore about how we're not that good in the MAC. We can play as well as anyone in the MAC this year and we've proved that even in some of our losses. But to already be 2-3 in the MAC at home with teams like Ohio, Kent State and Miami yet to visit, that's both alarming and frustrating to me.
GO BG!!!

If the temp was anything like it was in Indy this weekend, the weather was pretty fair.....OSUFALCON wrote:He ask what the hell are the students doing today?

Stand corrected. Looked like more than that to me.OSUFALCON wrote:good crowd noice but not a good crowd (2200). The best team in the MAC comes to AA and that's all we can get. Terrible. I took guy with be from Clyde who watch Dials play high school play and he couldn't believe we only had half of a crowd. He ask what the hell are the students doing today?
Hmmm... maybe I need to try again...OSUFALCON wrote:Warm day for Jan. but windy as heck. Warm temp. is no excuse....

At least we have people like the animals and the sideline squad who are working as hard as they can to give us back that advantage of playing at home. Maybe we'll even help the school get its slightly rowdy reputation back too...
I said it once b4 tonight and I'll say it again: Keep on fighting the good fight guys!

I'm sure that if/when we are good the fans will come back. The problem is that this town & student base do not support mediocrity or bottom of the barrel teams. This basketball team right now isn't very good. Even worse than that is that when they have their bad stretches they are almost PAINFUL to watch. In the end they fight and eventually make a run, at least they always seem to, but when they're building that defecit it is UGLY basketball.
I think when you combine our recent quality of play with the fact that BG isn't a huge basketball community anyways, this is what you get...crappy attendance. Look back at our most successful years in recent memory. I think we got about 3-4 sellouts in each of McLeod's senior year & Stacy's senior year. Those teams were among the best in the MAC each of those years and they still only averaged about 3200 fans a game.
Unfortunately we'll always have attendance woes when we're not at the top of the league, and history has shown even if we are at the top of the league we're not a great draw. It's unfortunate, but I'm not sure what we can do about it at this point. I'm tired of complaining about it.
As far as our advantage though that 2200 in there sounded like 8000+ for some stretches of the game yesterday. We just didn't make enough plays down the stretch to pull out the victory. Hopefully these guys will learn how to win these close ones and people will start coming back to watch this team.

Good post, hammb. Unfortunately, the one thing I'm certain of is many BG fans love a winner but if a team hits rough seas, they stop coming. Most of us are going to show up not matter what...we are die hards.
As much as I hate that, it seems to be the case.

I fuzzily recall my heady undergraduate days in the late '80s. It was the same deal. We were OK, but not great. A lot of people didn't care for Coach Larranaga and a lot of times, attendance was so-so.
I also recall asking my hall/room/class-mates, "Hey, wanna go to the game tonight?" The reply was, "No dude. I'm gonna watch TV/get drunk/play video games/do anything besides watch live NCAA basketball for free."
I didn't understand that attitude then. I don't understand it now. AA is an exciting place to be. The current undergrads, I dare say, will miss it when it's no longer available.
