eReaders - Kindle vs. Nook

I am in the market for an eReader like a Nook or a Kindle. Just wondering who on here has them? Which do you have? Do you like or dislike? Just need some help deciding which to buy!

I've heard better about the Nook because it's not proprietary like the Kindle. I don't know much else besides that. More people I know who recently purchased an eReader got a Nook and love it.

What do I know? I'm still reading from stone tablets so I have yet to adopt papyrus.

We bought a nook last year for our daughter who is a voracious reader and she absolutely loves it. We haven't tried a kindle so I can't really compare the two.

For what it's worth "Consumers Reports" rated all e-readers in its August 2010 magazine and rated the Kindle as the best with the Nook coming in fourth behind the two Sony readers as well. The Kindle was rated the highest for page turns, readibility, and navagation. The Nook had a below average rating on response time, i.e. sluggish page turns.They do indicate that the Nook received a software update at the end of test period. Nook was also downgraded for lack of type crispness and more weight (12 oz. to 10oz.) for Kindle. The Kindle's controls were viewed as more simple and easier to master. The I-Pad was also considered in the article but not rated as an e-reader. I-Pad was fast and eye-catching but less crisp. Also it is heavier at 24 oz and likely needs to be re-charged more often but it is obviously more than an e-reader. All this said, I own none of these devices (even though they have a technological draw) as I prefer the feel of a book and the free use of my local libraries.

I did a lot of research for some friends asking me about them last Christmas. The research at the time showed that the Kindle gets knocked for being a proprietary file format, but was better than the rest in almost every other conceivable way.

Take it with a grain of salt, as I haven't done much research this year, and I'm sure they've changed in the past year.

One thing about the Kindle is that it has actually been around for quite a few years. It's a far more established technology than the Nook. The Nook didn't really come around until the Kindle was already an established success.

Thanks all! Since I had a Wal-Mart gift card, I bought the Nook. Being able to borrow books from the library also was a big factor.
