One of these weekends I'd love to do a tour of the breweries in Michigan. I'm a big fan of Bell's and Founders.

Add New Holland. I also really, and want to take a trip up to Short's Brewery, big fan of huma lupa licious, and "hanging Frank (though the changed the name of that). Wolverine State Brewery in AA is great as well. Fantastic selection of Lagers, all brewed on site and the Menu has everything you can think of or want (they don't have a kitchen, what ever you want delivered is fine with them).

My buddy & I went to the WMU football game this season (which sucked) but managed to hit the brewpubs at Bells, New Holland, and Founders all that day. Pretty awesome beer drinking experience actually :)

New Holland is by far my favorite of the 3 to visit.

I took the tour through the Yeungling brewery about 10 years ago. The owner stopped and said hello to the group, and the tour goes right in to the plant. I guess you are all referring to Yeungling Lager.

All beer is good beer, some is just better than others.

Robby - those non-Cincinnati people just don't understand. They'll all just jealous of the great brewing tradition in Cincy. They're all haters.

Do you remember the Bob Shreve on The Schoenling All Night Theater? It was on every Friday night. He would drink Little Kings on the air all night and by 6 AM would be tanked.

The fact that the Hudepohl brands are being reintroduced is great news. Little Kings is being brewed again. And now - Wooden Shoe Beer from Minster is being brewed again. I had some of their lager last week. Wooden Shoe is brewing some specialty beers along with their traditional lager, which has a vintage taste.

To run around and talk about taste with these beers and comparing them to higher end beers is sorta missing the point. They are intended to be nostalgic (their traditional formulas on one hand) and ground-breaking (their specialty brews on the other). Ground-breaking isn't the right word.... but you know what I mean.

And yeah...... I have had a few 8 packs of Little Kings..... for the nostalgia..... and I am not ashamed to say I enjoyed them. :-D

FINALLY - I can go into a restaurant and order something made in Cincinnati - again. For the last 25 years..... everyone seemed to think only St. Louis knew how to brew beer. And it had become the most bland beverage on the planet. For me, it had gotten to the point that if I couldn't get a Sam Adams or some other specialty beer, I didn't order a beer.
I've purchased some Little Kings recently. They were NOT brewed in Cinci...they were brewed in, ugh, Pittsburgh.

Don't confuse the location of the current brewery with the original.

Hudepohl - Schoenling Brewing Company was a Cincinnati brewery. It was located in what is now known as "Over-The-Rhine". The old brewery building is currently used by Sam Adams. So most likely that Boston Lager you have with dinner this evening was brewed in OTR.

"Hudepohl-Schoenling Brewing Co. is the last of the great Cincinnati breweries. Unlike the dozens of hometown breweries that faltered during Prohibition, Hudepohl, which was founded in 1885, persevered. Schoenling Brewing Co. was created in 1933. The two breweries merged in 1986, and in 1999 the company was sold to Snyder International Brewing Group. The old Schoenling bottling plant was sold to Sam Adams-Boston Beer Co., which now bottles Hudepohl-Schoenling brands".

Christian Moerlein is also a Cincinnati beer. (It was reintroduce in 1981 at a small bar/restaurant calledArnolds - located in the OTR ) I spent a few good evenings at Arnold's when I was in grad school at Miami.

Don't worry...... you Pittsburgh people will always have Iron City.

You've got that right on the Sam Adams, I'm not sure if they still are, but for a long while Genesee was brewing Sam Adams under contract here in Rochester.

Not sure where they brew "Samuel Jackson".

I think Wooden Shoe - while listed as being in Minster - may be getting brewed under contract in Columbus. Not exactly sure on that.

Its the formula that's important. Cincy just had an unbelievable brewing history. It was home to a LOT of German immigrants during the 19th C. Over-the-Rhine was the German neighbor just north of downtown. You had to cross the canal to get to it. Hence the name. OTR is a pretty rough place these days. You need to know where you're going.

I believe only specialty or seasonal Sam Adams beers are brewed in Cincinnati. Jim Koch's dad was a brewmaster at Schoenling and I believe Jim worked there as well. When Jim told his dad he wanted to make his own beer, his dad showed him a recipe the Koch family had created earlier. That recipe is the basis for the Boston Lager.

A lot of the Hudy and Little Kings stuff isn't made in Cincinnati but they are trying to ramp up production so beer associated with Cincinnati is once again made in Cincinnati.

Iron City is what we used to bring into the BG baseball games in the late 80s when there was about 38 people in the stands. It must have been on sale at Quarters or something because one spring we went to a lot of games and drank a lot of Iron City.

Bob Shreve was great.

As far as Yuengling goes, I've had the black and tan and the lager and both were wonderful. I haven't had the light yet but hey, it looks good on TV.

When I was a grad student at Miami, we used to buy a case or two of Fall City every Friday. You'd pitch in a buck and drink away. Studio was from 1-5 PM, so we'd typically run uptown around 3 and grab a couple of cases. We called it Fall City Fridays.

There is a time and a place for cheap beer........

Sounds like you actually got a skunked beer that got too much light. Even bad beer shouldn't taste or smell like skunk.
