The quickrete would work.... sand will also.

Most important is getting the base done correctly and to provide an edge to reduce unit creep or movement.

Definitely don't want your unit to creep.
I love people who can laugh at themselves. It saves me the effort.

pdt1081, I pray that no semi gets close enough to kick up one of these pavers.

Tech, I used a PVC edging similar to what you posted to keep the pavers from pushing/creeping. The base consists of between 3 and 5 inches of 4-11 stone (Oak Harbor has a hard clay that I got really tired of trying to get to grade by hand, (really hard after a dry summer like we had), 1 1/2inches of manufactured sand, and I plan to use a Polymer modified sand to lock the pavers in place.

I like the bench that was incorporated in the purgola that you showed, I also liked the screen. That is a features I planned into my design. The Arborvitae has a limited lifespan and I plan to incorporate a screen/trellis between the five feet spacing of the 6"x 6" posts after I remove the trees, besides that I like my neighbor more than the previous owner did (who planted the trees).

You should be fine.... the base is everything on pavers.

Glad you like the pergola - its located at Wright State. Actually based on a design I did for my own house a few years back, but never built.

My comment about a semi was in reference to my (lack of) experience with pavers.

Good choice on the stone base. With just the clay any moisture getting through would cause the pavers to become uneven in a short period of time. Did you happen to use fabric between the clay and stone? You should be fine without as long as you have good drainage away from the patio.

Looks good and you have way more time on your hands than I can dream of right now.

I figured as much. My kids do drive the Cub Cadet pretty fast if I'm not paying too much attention.

I didn't use any fabric, but that side of the house has great drainage.
