Number two:

Just read Stephen Hunter's new Bob Lee Swagger (a fictional former Marine sniper played by Mark Wahlberg in the movie The Shooter) book. On the last page a predator drone drops a 500 pounder on Bin Laden and takes him out. Read the last page the day Bin Laden went down. Pretty weird.

You don't have to hate someone to kill them...you don't have to hate someone to be glad they're dead. Sometimes the mad dog needs to be put down Old Yeller style..if doing that saves lives and further cripples an organization bent on murder, OK..I'm a happy camper.

HEY! While we're correcting misquotes, would those of you that are going to be sending out that stupid Al Gore-Oliver North-Iran Contra-Osama bin Laden FACTUALLY INACCURATE e-mail around, please get your facts straight

The e-mail -

You know, it's funny. I remember very vividly the Oliver North hearings, but did not recall the name of Osama bin Laden as the terrorist that North was threatened by. Has this slimeball been around that long?. It's pretty evident, in hindsight that we should have listened to OLLIE!

I was at a UNC lecture the other day where they played a video of Oliver North during the Iran-Contra deals during the Reagan administration. I was naive back then but was surprised by this particular clip.

There was Olie in front of God and Country getting the third degree. But what he said stunned me. He was being drilled by some senator (EDIT: That would be Sen. Al Gore, later to be Vice President Al Gore) I didn't recognize who asked him;

'Did you not recently spend close to $60,000 for a home security system?'

Oliver replied, 'Yes I did sir.'

The senator continued, trying to get a laugh out of the audience, 'Isn't this just a little excessive?'

'No sir,' continued Oliver.

'No. And why not?'

'Because the life of my family and I were threatened.'

'Threatened? By who.'

'By a terrorist, sir.'

'Terrorist? What terrorist could possibly scare you that much?'

'His name is Osama bin Laden.'
EDIT: NO NO NO NO NO NO NO - It was Abu Nidal that he was talking about. Osama was fighting the Commies in Afghanistan at that time and guess who was providing the arms to him and the Afghani resistance forces?

At this point the senator tried to repeat the name, but couldn't pronounce it, which most people back then probably couldn't. A couple
of people laughed at the attempt. Then the senator continued.

'Why are you so afraid of this man?'

'Because sir, he is the most evil person alive that I know of.'

'And what do you recommend we do about him?'

'If it were me I would recommend an assassin team be formed to eliminate him and his men from the face of the earth.'

The senator disagreed with this approach and that was all they showed of the clip.

It's scary when you think 15 years ago the government was aware of Osama bin Laden and his potential threat to the security of the world.
I guess like all great tyrants they start small but if left untended spread like the virus they truly are.

WHile we're on the slippery slope...it's worth pointing out that Abu Nidal was being sheltered in Iraq by saddham hussein until saddham's boy's put a bullet in his head..... :-)

WARNING: BOB SWAGGER FANS_SPOILER HERE!!!

Stephen Hunter kills Bin Laden on the last page of his new bob Swagger novel-which I finished a couple hours before the Seals finished Bin Laden. Interesting because it seems dated already since much of the surrounding story is based on what we all believed a few days ago - he was living in some G0d (Allah?) forsaken place in Afghanistan near the border with no creature comforts, etc.

The conspiracy stuff IS fun-I'm thinking Obama buys him off with the $25 mil which he now won't have to give anyone since its the Seals who "kill" him. The Seals are sent in to a Hollywood type set (The WHite House acknowledges they built one-how convenient is that?) where they shoot some stuff up and "crash an obsolete chopper. At the same time a few Paki plants go in and shoot up a recently vacated house that sits empty in Abbledabahooie or wherever. The neighbors don't know the folks who lived there so they think its real. Paki government is clueless and embarrased that they didn't know he was there so they spin their wheels deciding who to blame and how to hang onto US billions instead of investigating thoroughly. Bin Laden agrees to move to Brazil where he lives in a luxury compound with the remaining Nazis and gets 72 virgins ahead of schedule to keep him happy. the rest of Al Queada has no clue and buys in that he is dead, disbands, Ghadaffi gives up and Obama and his best buddy Bush (who was part of the deal) reap huge oil benefits from the rebels who sell them the early oil concessions for scaring Ghaddafi into succumbing to the revolution. Obama's real boost comes when he moves the billions in foreign aid we give to Pakistan and puts it against the debt. His approval ratings go sky high and he still has the oil money to fall back on should he not get re-elected.

But that's too easy.....

We should have told Al Qaeda that while we captured Bin Laden, we sent him to a farm instead of killing him. That would have kept them from getting angry about this...
