Heard an old tune by the Lemon Pipers today that got me thinking about rockers that passed through MAC universities. Came up with 5 only to find that two never attended MAC schools as I had believed. Bartlett gets two mentions for two bands. Can anyone come up with some others? So far I got:
Lemon Pipers Miami
Jonathan Edwards Ohio
Bill Bartlett of the Lemon Pipers and later Ram Jam Miami
Ric Ocasek of Bowling Green State University near Toledo, Ohio
From Wikipedia: After graduating high school in Cleveland, Ric then attended Bowling Green State University near Toledo, Ohio.

Re: MAC Rockers
I think Ocasek may have lasted a year, but we'll still claim him.

As I perused Wikipedia about the listed guys, the thing that stuck out was the almost unanimous line "attended ------ University for a short time before dropping out".

I thought I had a few. I had thought Mark Avsec, keyboards for Donnie Iris and the Cruisers went to Kent, but it was Case Western. I also thought Trent Reznor went to Akron.
FWIW, Check out the clips on youtube of Donnie Iris at Blossom from the early 80's. Very good footage and also Avsec looks stoned out of his mind.

I was all but certain that Jorma Kaukonen went to OU but it was Antioch and that MArtin Mull (not exactly a rocker but he can definitley play guitar and rock out if you like funny rock and roll) went to OU as well, but he attended Rhode Island School of Design or somesuch. MAybe I should start a thread about rockers people THOUGHT went to MAC schools.

I'm pretty sure that Joe Walsh attended Kent State for a short time. They even mentioned it at the Eagles concert.

I'm not sure what you consider a rocker, but Red Wanting Blue was formed by 2 students at OU.

Kent State is running some commercial with a guy from Devo claiming he graduated from there.

Re: MAC Rockers
Bob Lewis, Gerald Casale, Mark Mothersbaugh and Chrissie Hynde all attended KSU in the early 1970's.
Bob & Gerald formed Devo (Mark replaced Bob very soon thereafter, before the band started their recording career).
http://art.kent.edu/ mentions that Gerald has a BFA from there.
Mark has an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from there too.
Chryssie went on to form The Pretenders.
They all knew each other in college.

Never heard of them but I will definitely look them up.footballguy51 wrote:I'm not sure what you consider a rocker, but Red Wanting Blue was formed by 2 students at OU.
OK, just did- any band that plays Explorers AND ukeleles gets in. No questions asked. They've been around for 14 years- can't believe I haven't heard of them.
