National Anthem!!!!

Could we please get rid of the rockstar / popstar celebrity singing our National Anthem for the Super Bowl. I think it is a disgrace to the song when the performer tries to make the song 'her own' and adds extra notes and trills. And holds out the notes until they run out of breath. The song is great how it is and their is no need to change it. Hard enough to sing with all the jumping around of the notes.

And know the words!!!! C.A. Messed up the words TWICE and every in the stands noticed, the players noticed and heck even one of the ref's was shaking his head. Why can't we just have a boys choir or girls choir, an orchestra or a college band perform the song how it is meant to be sung. Our National Anthem is the only one people try to sing and make it their own. You never heard different versions of Canada's or England's anthem.

And from reading twitter, looks like over 2 million people also agree.

And could C.A. wear any more lipstick. Was she planning on going to see Charlie Sheen in rehab after the game or working the street corners. That's what she looked like.

Funny thing about this...I was driving to a friend's house to watch the game, and HEARD this on the radio...my reaction? "She doesn't know the WORDS to the Natl. Anthem? And they hired her to sing it?"
The announcer mentioned how "moved" the players were by this...said he saw tears on a few of their faces. The color man said, "maybe it's because she missed several parts of the song"...
I'm a fanatic (admittedly) about not "jazzing up" the Natl. Anthem...but one of my friends 1st words to me when I got there were, " I'll bet that really set you off".... I responded, " it should set everyone off". :!:

Read some posts excusing her because no one else would know what its like to sing the anthem in front of thousands of people. I'm guessing almost everyone on this board sings it in front of thousands of people several times a year. Maybe not solo but c'mon- its the National Anthem-you sing it ten thousand times in school and beyond- she's a pro- does she muff the words to her songs? Lame. Glad I didn't see it.

*steps on soapbox*

As a musician (and one who actually has a degree in music) that was the most disgraceful, ugly, and disrespectful performance of our National Anthem I have ever heard in my life. I completely agree with you gmartin about performers trying to make it their own. This is OUR National Anthem - not the performer's time to show off. I'm classically trained which means that I'm taught how to embellish and show off my voice in my performances; however, never once in all my years of singing the National Anthem have I ever embellished the written notes out of sheer respect for it. I think it's pathetic that people are allowed to do that, and that the people who schedule the singers let those people sing it! The National Anthem is the time to show respect for our country, NOT pump up the crowd.
I was sitting next to a veteran who was in the Marine Corps Band for 4 years and he was absolutely appalled. Hell, I hate canned music but I'll take a professional recording over that kind of live "performance" any day of the week.

The sad part is, BGSU does not do a great job about scheduling singers for the anthem either. There have been some pretty awful people singing it here as well.

Just once I would like to see someone who sings it as written with respect and decorum, not flailing around like an idiot.

*steps off soapbox*

Sorry - one of the things that really sets me off.

Who is the screaming, no talent, lead singer for Aerosmith?

I heard him attempt to sing the National Anthem at the Indianapolis 500 a few years back. I wrote the speedway and complained and they told me that he meant no disrespect to the song.

A few days later, they announced he would not be asked back and apologized for his rendition of the song.

It was Steven Tyler. I was at the race that year as well. Yeah his rendition was horrible and he changed the last line of the song to "And the home of the Indianapolis 500."

For some reason Carl Lewis sang the anthem years back and it was dreadful.

I sing quite a bit myself and even got very nervous Saturday morning auditioning in front of about 10 people (4 of them doing the judging). Nerves can happen to anybody, but yeah...forgetting the words inexcusable.

The National Anthem at the MIS race in August last year was also disgusting. After it was over we were all convinced it was a joke or something. It was done by the lead signer of the rock band "Saving Abel" and it sounded like the guy was up all night and completely wasted.

The comments by the fans are priceless. Thank God the flyover drowned out some of it.

I am not sure of this guys name but when SuperBowl XLVIII comes around in three years in NY I hope they have the guy sing the National Anthem who sings God Bless America at the Yankees games. I believe this guy is an opera singer and has the best baritone and tenor voice I have ever heard out of a singer. I been to several Yankee games and hearing him sing at the games makes me feel better. I hope they will keep the local tradition and let him sing. I am not sure if he has ever performed the National Anthem but his other music is amazing.

Well working in marketing for the Colts I will try and do my best to give my input for next year pregame and halftime show although I am guessing a majority of it will be decided by the league.

Here is a CRAZY thought, why isn't it played by MILITARY bands?

I would have been happy to have been there playing instead of swilling beers at the local watering hole...

The fellow's name is Ronan Tynan. Here's a link to a little hot water he got into in 2009.

May have blown over and I wasn't aware of it until I googled him.
