To reward the Princess for her fine achievements in school, Lady Byron and I decided that we'd fly down to NYC on Saturday, spend the day and take Amtrak home on Sunday.
So, we caught a 6:00 flight on Saturday morning into JFK and took the subway downtown. Dropped our bags at the hotel and:
Walked to Rockefeller center and went to the "Top of the Rock". Better than the Empire State Building because 1) It's much less of a wait; 2) You can see the Empire State Building; 3) Much better view of Central Park.
From there we walked to Grand Central, caught the subway over to MSG and walked over to the High Line Park. It's a pretty stunning use of an old elevated railway bed. It would have been better if we hadn't had a whining Princess.
Had lunch at Chelsea market and then went downtown to Battery Park and watched the street performers and fed the squirrels.
For dinner, we went to Lombardi's (supposedly USA's first pizzeria) in Little Italy and got a delicious coal oven NY style pizza. Across the streed was "Rice to Riches" which is a rice-pudding bar with about 20 flavors. I highly recomment both. After dinner, we're three of about a hundred thousand people in Times Square and we run into one of the Princess' teachers. Small world.
On Sunday morning, we stumbled upon H20Ville's nirvana. I'm in the lobby of the hotel at about 7:00 and there's an old guy with a "Yankees Old Timers" ID on. I don't recognize him, but I say, hello and he's very charming.
I go to a deli get some coffee and a bagel, and go back up to the room. The Princess and Lady B are going to eat at the hotel since the room includes breakfast for two. I tell them I think there may be some Yankees old-timers staying at the hotel.
About 1/2 hour later, I do down to the restaurant, and they're all excited. "This place is crawling with old guys wearing big-ass World Series rings." Lady Byron says, there was a bald guy with tattoos all over his arms at the next table that I was asking about the lemon poppyseed bread. I said, "David Wells". I talked to a front office guy in the lobby and he said they always use that hotel.
So, H20, on Old Timers weekend, get yourself a room at the Sheraton at 7th and 53rd and stalk some of your heroes.

The M &M boys are dead-not sure about Whitey or Ralph Terry. Hector Lopez was another fave for reasons that elude me and I liked Bud Daley because my dad booed him vociferously at a Tiger's game for stalling until a reliever could warm-up. My dad HATED the Yankees-big Indian fan. So I liked Daley a lot.
Never been to a game at Yankee Stadium, old or new. Haven't been to NYC since I was maybe 6. I'll get there one day. Maybe on Old Timers weekend-although any weekend I go will be Old Timer's weekend.

As a Pirate fan, Ralph Terry is my favorite Yankee.
