I used to know a LOT about baseball rules but then I turned thirteen: Tonight David Robertson replaced CC Sabathia in the eighth inning with runners on first and second, I think. One out by Sabathia and on roberston's first pitch the batter grounds into a double play. Yankees got the go-ahead in the bottom othe eighth and a new pitcher closed out the game in the ninth. A one pitch win would certainly seem to tie a record but- is it possible to win a game without throwing a poitch? Or a pitch?

I suppose the new pitcher could pick off a runner for the third out of an inning without throwing a pitch. That's the only thing I could see being possible.

Yeah, I figured that out later- I used to love rules trivia: how a pitcher can have a perfect game even though a fielder commits an error, things like that.

That must be an old article because if I am not mistaken a Tiger pitcher did that this year. Trailing in the 7th inning Detroit brought in I believe it was Al Albequerque, and he immediately picked the runner off first pace to end the inning. Detroit scored in the bottom half of the 7th to take the lead. Benoit pitched the 8th and Valverde the 9th, so it has happened a few times.

Not sure I understand the question, but it would seem as though the answer would be "infinity". Given that the pitcher could strike out the side each inning with the catcher dropping the third strike every time. If every runner reaches first and then advances before the next strike out, then this would never end.

I believe that the dropped third strkike rule is that with no runner on first base or with two outs, the batter immediately becomes a runner.

If I'm missing something, let me know.

Speaking of records, I believe Mariners' OF Trayvon Robinson set some kind of mark with this four-base error yesterday in Texas:

Lord Byron, you hit the nail on the head. There is no limit to how many strikeouts a pitcher can earn.

Another scenario could be an extra inning game, where the score was 0-0. If the pitcher strikes out the side every inning, this could continue for as long as the game continues.
