Yeungling beer

Here is SW Ohio, Yeungling just became available. It took a few weeks longer than they planned because the demand was so high in other parts of the state. I saw on another thread someone called it "over-rated" or some such twaddle. Nonsense. Yeungling is priced the same as Bud or Coors or Miller Lite but it has good flavor. It's not priced to compete with $9 or $10 a six-pack micro-brews. As far as a buck a bottle six packs go, it's fantastic. If you're getting $2.50 draft with dinner and you can have either a Miller-Coors-Bud or a Yeungling, it's no contest.

Someone on the same thread took a shot at Hudepohl. That person needs to pick up a six of Hudy Amber Lager. Like Yeungling, priced the same at Bud/Milller Lite but you can taste it and it tastes good. As far as Hudy De-Lite and Hudy 14k, it's cheap and not bad at all. I like 'em both.

Anyway I'm not beer snob, just a beer lover. Can't wait for someone to mention "finish" or "mouth feel" or "notes' now. :drinkers:

I love living in the heart of Yeungling country. It's a buck or two cheaper a case than most mainstream beers and I don't think there's any comparison in regard to taste.

That's just it! It IS drastically overrated because so many people talk about it as if it is this great beer. I agree 100% that it is much better than Bud/Miller/Coors, and it is priced to compete with those macro lagers. If that is the basis of comparison, sure, it's pretty good.

I still say it's drastically overrated due to the novelty of being the oldest brewery, and because it had no distribution to Ohio. I know a lot of people who would bring back cases and cases of it when they went to Pennsylvania...and people who would give them cash to buy even more cases. Just not that great, IMO...there are plenty of better beers available. Perhaps there aren't many better AT THAT PRICE POINT, but on the whole, there are MANY beers that are better. And about a billion that I'd drive further for than Yeungling.

hammb, no argument there. I tell folks, for the price, you won't find a better beer. The key is - for the price.

It's the same thing with wine - I hear folks going on and on about certain wines, then I see they are $20 or $30 a bottle. Well, yeah, sure they SHOULD be great. But Mrs. 87 & I discovered two really good riojas for less than $10 a bottle.

On our budget, Yeungling and a Faustino VI rioja fit nicely!

It's a shame that folks have over-hyped Yeungling, but I recall the same thing happening when Coors came to Ohio. After all that hype, I tasted one and thought, "what's all the fuss about?"

Yeah, not old enough to remember the Coors phenomenon, but from what I've heard it's eerily similar. I'm with ya though. I can see myself drinking a lot more Yeungling so long as it remains at the same price as Bud/Coors. It IS better than them. I haven't tried the Yeungling Light yet, but I'm curious to give it a shot.

All in all none of those will ever be my favorite beer, but more times than not I'd rather drink a Yeungling than one of BMC products.

I guess it's just the way one views "overrated." If you have some buddies who are freaking out about Yeungling like it's the best beer available anywhere for any price, then those pinheads may be overrating it, but don't hold that against Yeungling.

What I'm hoping is this: I'll be able to go into a local watering hole and get a bucket of Yeungling bottles or a pitcher of Yeungling draft for the same price as Bud/Miller/Coors--that's all. I think Yeungling fills that slot extremely well, it is a lot tastier than the big boys but priced the same. It ain't 'posed to be Fin Du Monde.

It is "Yuengling". And I didn't take a shot at Hudepohl...I referenced it for our friends in Cincy. Damn, lighten up....

Personally my fave brew is Red Stripe from Jamaica...mon.

Seems like we are seeing a resurgence of some regional brews, which I think is the real blessing in all of this.....

The fact that the Hudepohl brands are being reintroduced is great news. Little Kings is being brewed again. And now - Wooden Shoe Beer from Minster is being brewed again. I had some of their lager last week. Wooden Shoe is brewing some specialty beers along with their traditional lager, which has a vintage taste.

To run around and talk about taste with these beers and comparing them to higher end beers is sorta missing the point. They are intended to be nostalgic (their traditional formulas on one hand) and ground-breaking (their specialty brews on the other). Ground-breaking isn't the right word.... but you know what I mean.

And yeah...... I have had a few 8 packs of Little Kings..... for the nostalgia..... and I am not ashamed to say I enjoyed them. :-D

FINALLY - I can go into a restaurant and order something made in Cincinnati - again. For the last 25 years..... everyone seemed to think only St. Louis knew how to brew beer. And it had become the most bland beverage on the planet. For me, it had gotten to the point that if I couldn't get a Sam Adams or some other specialty beer, I didn't order a beer.

Had a Yeungling draft at Myles last week...it was OK...I didn't wet my pants or anything...well I didn't right then, but that's a whole different story.

I live in Michigan... God's country, if you will. We're a definite hotbed for craft brews. Bell's is king, but I love the Frankenmuth pilsner. Sander's is making a second run of their chocolate stout. It's going to be a bigger production run this year, so I hope to score some.

I really liked Yeungling lite. Yeungling itself did not do much for me.

As I recall, the movie "Smoky and the Bandit" was about a rogue trucker smuggling Coors to the Eastern seaboard. Yuengling hasn't gotten wuite that big a rep. And Coors didn't deserve it, IMO.

IIRC, Coors got a lot of pub because Paul Newman drank it...but I was just a kid back then...

Uh, yeah, well, I wasn't even BORN then. The Coors thing was just some oral history passed down by the elders. Yeah, that's it..
