Guinness

I remember about 12-15 years ago there was a big deal about Guinness making a push in the U.S. There would be training to teach bartenders how to pour properly with the spoon and how to let it settle and when to put the beer in front of the customer etc.

Man do I like Guinness but I never order it because it has no alcohol in it. Ten years ago at Crowley's in Cincinnati black-n-tans were popular and so was something called an Irish Car Bomb which featured a shot of Jameson's and many rattled front teeth. Now, I usually go the Smithwicks route if travelling that Irish path.

St. Pat's day is soon here and Guiness will make a pretty penny off of those not drinking dyed green Miller Lite.

Irish Beer: great stuff or over-hyped brew?

I really like Smithwick's and Harp's and the few other Irish beers I've had so I say "great stuff."

I spent a week in Dublin, Ireland in October. Between all the Guinness we had (which was AMAZING over there) and visiting Ireland's oldest pub (founded in 1198!!), it was an outstanding trip. It was for an academic conference, so it also meant getting the Purdue gang back together. I want to go back so bad ...

I like Guinness because it's so light. It's similar in calories and alcohol content to an American Light Lager, but offers more flavor and, thanks to the nitrogen, a much better mouthfeel. Guinness is by no means my favorite beer, and not even close to my favorite Stout, but if I want to drink beer all day it's a good alternative to Bud Light or similar. My problem is that it's so much more pricey than those beers that I would compare it to.

I do absolutely LOVE Irish Car Bombs though...it's my favorite shot by far.
