Job Search Help - NW Ohio

Hello everyone! This is a personal appeal for assistance and if it doesn't belong here, I apologize and ask a mod to remove it.

I currently am a teacher at a small Christian school. It appears that due to enrollment, we are going to downsize. I was the last staff member hired and so I'm betting I will be the first to go. So, I am currently looking for a job in Northwest Ohio and reaching out everywhere I can.

I graduated from BGSU in 1997 with a B.A. in Communications and minor in Journalism. I worked for Clear Channel radio in Defiance and Napoleon, and was supposed to transfer to a job with CC in Youngstown which fell through. Since then I have worked for United Way - both as a marketing director and CEO. I left the non-profit world in 2010 and began teaching. I currently do not have an Ohio teaching license for public schools, so that is not an option unless I go back to school (which I am considering).

With my degree, and how radio has changed since I graduated, I feel wholly unqualified for anything. But, I am organized, thorough, and a hard worker. I learn quickly and do tasks well. I am very tech-savvy and also love sports. If I could do something with sports for a living, I would in a heartbeat.

I don't know what I'm asking for I guess. If anyone knows of job openings in NW Ohio or online opportunities, or has recommendations on how to work on this process, I would appreciate it. I am taking advantage of the BGSU career services, but I can't get in with them until later this month. I am fortunate that I will get paid through the summer so I have some time to work on things, but still nervous.

Thanks, in advance. Again, sorry if this offends anyone. :?

Chris -

A quick response.

You should get in touch with the placement office on campus. They actually have placement services for alumni.

I would start there.

Worst case scenario - you can substitute teach without the certificate for up to 10 years. If memory serves me correctly. At least would be a way to pay the bills and you have the classroom experience.

Chris,
You've taken a good first step by coming here and reaching out to us and scheduling help with the placement office at BG.

Having worked in HR for almost 20 years now, I know that many good jobs are filled through network contacts.

You've got to work any and all contacts you have and let them know you are out there and looking for a job. If you're sure that you're actually going to be laid off -- do any of your students' parents own a business? Let them know.

Your's sports contacts may know someone who is looking, etc.

Network. Network. Network.

For some reason my PM isn't working so I will just post this here.

Chris,

I am sorry to hear about the downsizing. I don't know if you are considering retail but I just started managing the Sprint store in Perrysburg across form Levis Commons. I am looking for sales reps. Let me know what you think. Talk to you soon.
