So big news this weekend .... my girlfriend and I got engaged! The big day was on Saturday in DC near the Jefferson Memorial. Lots of excitement in each of our families and all of our friends! And of course, lots of big plans forthcoming and excitement for our future lives together. She is a wonderful, wonderful person and I'm so thankful every day of my life that we are together.

BTW ... I'm making it AZZ official before making it Facebook official. Priorities, priorities. Will probably be Facebook official soon and with pictures. Feel free to look me up on Facebook, Mark Lohrum.

Congrats and don't believe the "happy wife" BS. You being you is what attracted her and if you spend your time TRYING to make her happy neither of you will like it very well. Aretha said it best (and loudest) Respect each other, give in when its more important to her than it is to you but expect the same in return and understand there WILL be days...(weeks)? I hit 35 married years this year so I know a little. Believe me "happy husband, happy life" is just as accurate. Good luck! BTW: is tjre really a"Facebook official" status?

Haha thanks for the advice everyone! My father taught me a thing or two on the subject. Marry rich, buy new. And, memorize the following line: yes dear, here's my credit card.

Mark, Sounds like your dad and mine would've been good friends.... Late in his life (he passed away at age 89), he was asked by our parish priest (who then mentioned this when Joyce and I got married nearly 7 yrs. ago)... "to what do you owe your successful long marriage?" (folks were married for 68 yrs then) \:D/
The response? " you have to learn to say YES a lot!"

Congrats!

A man and woman were recently celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. While cutting the cake, the wife was moved after seeing her husband's eyes fill with tears.
The wife took his arm, and looked at him affectionately. "I never knew you were so sentimental." she whispered.
"No... No..." he said, choking back his tears, "That's not it at all. Remember when your father found us in the barn and told me to either marry you or spend the next 50 years in jail?"
"Yes," the wife replied. "I remember it like yesterday."
"Well," said the husband, "Today I would have be a free man."

My old boss's dad used to say he was going to take his wife to Hawaii for their 40th wedding anniversary. Then he may go back for their 50th and bring her back.
