Nothing "pleasant" about Mt. Pleasant flashback!

Post by BGSU33 »

Talking about this BG at CMU game gave me a flashback to the 1995 season .......

.....I was in Mt. Pleasant for BG's last loss at CMU in 1995. Let me tell you, there was nothing "pleasant" if you were a BG fan that day in Mt. Pleasant. I can still remember a guy in a truck beside us in traffic waving his finger "NO" at us as we got close to CMU's campus as if to say - you're not going to win today. I can also still hear the fireworks exploding as BG went down in flames to the Chips that day. Not to mention, I nearly got locked in Michigan State's football stadium by their security crew when we stopped by to visit the campus in East Lansing on the way back to BG. What a trip! I've never gone back to CMU since.

That loss to CMU in 1995 also came two games after BG's first win over Missouri. With our win over Mizzou early on that year, which was two games after BG QB Ryan Henry threw SIX INTs!!!! (Yes, 6!) in a loss to La. Tech in the season-opener, I thought we had put the the 1994 "fat punter" loss to CMU behind us. But, we ended up losing again in heart-breaking fashion to CMU. They even ran back a two-point conversion for a score on us that day. Heck, we even lost an even tougher game to CMU in 1993 by two-points. Those three losses have given me nightmares about going back to Mt. Pleasant.

Seriously though, if I lived closer, I would certainly go back. But when I was a student, CMU was certainly the thorn in BG's side. At least we haven't lost to CMU since those three consecutive losses in 1993, 1994 and 1995.
GO BG!!!

My personal theory is that we didn't put the fat punter to rest until we pulled the same thing with Cole Magner at Northwestern. That killed the curse.

The Mrs. and I were at that game in 1995. I remember the same guy giving us the salute as we drove into town.

The highlight of the trip was losing money at the Indian Casinos. What a waste of a long weekend.

Yes, no doubt, CMU's "fat punter" in 1994 haunted BG for 10 years!!! That game really was the "straw that broke BG's back." It really did. As a team, BG never recovered nor showed signs of anything like the success we had leading up to that game (BG was 9-1 at the time in 1994 before the CMU disaster) until seven years later in 2001. We had six consecutive losing seasons following the "fat punter" loss to CMU! Man that was a long stretch!!!!!

Until last season when we went to a bowl game and won last year, it officially put to rest the curse of the fat punter for BG.... but not for me. I will always remember that game and I can still see him lumbering down the West sideline in what seemed like a 10 minute jog to score that touchdown. Our Las Vegas Bowl trip and Top-25 ranking went right now the tubes after that game. God was that a killer!

"Let the fat punter go...."

Apparently, that was our defensive philosophy on that play because there's no way that guy should have scored a TD from that far away. Unfortunately, the "Fat Punter" will always live on for some us, I just can't forget that memory. I'm reminded of him every time we play CMU or when I walk into a bakery. -- Who said that?! :D

I'm glad the fat punter doen't cause problems anymore. Another 90 years and he'd be like my Chicago Cubbies goat!!

I remember a cold, blustery day in 1990 at Mt. Pleasant. The Falcons were mired in Moe Agony's last season, and this was a pretty bad team. (2-8-1 on the year.) Final score was only 17-0, but it was a bad game. Unseasonably cold for a late September day. I went camping that night upon my return to BG.

Thank God I was Freddie that day. The suit was the only thing keeping me warm. And hey, girl cheerleaders were lining up to hug me and have me throw the big wing around them!
