Thoughts on the CMU game...

Post by Falconfreak90 »

Well, the freaklings and I had a great time on their first real road trip. In 2002, Mrs Freak and I made the trip up and were disgusted with the CMU student body. I thought "Maybe that was just a bad day or something?"
Nope...that student body is, by far, the worst in the MAC. I was passing the football with the boys in the "family" lot  and it seemed like every time I turned around some CMU dilrod was yelling "BG sucks!!!" One guy came stumbling by with a suitcase of beer in hand and yelled "Bowling Green can lick my F*&%ing balls"....right in front of the boys. :x A CMU fan came over and said "We're not sure he's gonna graduate". We were in a spot with other BG fans that were older and I'm sure they didn't appreciate that at all. I know ever school has a few but this was a constant stream of insults...and for what? After a while, Josh and Jake started yelling back things like "Yeah? We beat you 23-3 last yr and we're gonna beat you again today!" My boys talking smack with drunken CMU students. I was laughing up a storm. I really tried to ignore these people but after a while, I just couldn't do it. One idiot passes by and says "BG ain't sh*t without Josh Harris!!!". Hmmmm....BGSU 99 and I politely told him to remember the name Omar Jacobs. I think he knows who Omar is now!

One doofus was attempting to put ketchup on his hot dog at half time and I walked up to get some straws. He says "I hate these damn ketchup packets!" He sees me and says "I hate Bowling Green too!" I replied, "Envy will get you nowhere my friend" and calmly walked away. Ask BGSU 96 and 99 about our breakfast get togther at Burger King. We barely made it into the the parking lot when the "BG F'In SUCKS" chants began.

BG sucks? And just who was 3-9 last yr? Not BG. Who was the West champ and played in the MCB? Not CMU. And this crap continued thru the whole game. I was amazed and stunned at the stupidity of that crowd. Then I remembered that CMU has had one winning season the last 9 years. They obviously don't have a clue.

That's why it is so much fun to shut people up when your team is drilling them on the scoreboard. You see these morons thru the first half and then suddenly, they're gone. HAHAHAHAHA!! I love it.

Omar played an excellent game, as did all the WR's. I thought we would be able to run the ball better than we did. At one point in the 3rd quarter, we had 3 straight false start penalties....that was horrible. Penalties have haunted us all year. Jovon Burkes was clobbering people all day on the field and Teddy Piepkow played a huge game. MAtt Leininger also saw extensive action and played well. Those of you that thought he was done for the year? No way....I was really happy to see Matt back out there. The O line played a great game and protected Omar very, VERY well.

CMU's stadium is really nice...too bad the people there are idiots for the most part.

After 2002, I said I'd never go back. Well, I did. And I will again the next time we go up there. Nothing more fun than walking in someone else's house, getting verbally abused, and then walking out with a big win wondering where all the loudmouths went!
I had a blast with the boys and Steve Gerling, Kurt's dad, sat right behind us. On my left was Greg Kupke and his parents. And Ham0331 and his son Dave Jr were on my right. The boys even got to play catch with Freddie Falcon...they took their football in. Special thanks to Omar, Matt L and Kory L for taking extra time to chat with the boys. I would totally understand if they wanted to get right on the team busses and get outta there. And yet they took the time to talk to my boys. I can't tell ya how much I appreciate that. BTW, all 3 players thanked us for coming up and supporting the team. Steve Sanders was another one that was very grateful for the support. Sanders is becoming a big time weapon.

Bring on the Cards!

One thing the Falcon radio crew noted about that sequence was that it was an odd formation -- empty backfield, quad left (with one receiver spread out further than the other three) one right.

I haven't studied our formations closely enough to know how often we've run that before.

I wonder if this was a trick play, and our guys were rattled.

Freak:

I'm consistently disturbed at the language people use in the presence of children. I don't care if the fans want to talk smack - we're going to beat you, blah, blah, blah - but for Pete's sake, keep it PG. There's entirely too much obscene language.

Glad you and the boys were able to hold your heads high after the game.

And thanks for sharing the players taking extra time with them. Three players did that in Philly and, boy, what an impact. I love hearing about (and seeing) that type of class act by our Falcons!

It is very frustrating to hear all the stories of verbal harassment, especially like you said in front of the kids. That's just uncalled for. Unfortunately, there are a lot of morons out there that can give a school or a fan base a bad name. It only takes one loud mouth to give a place a bad reputation. There's nothing wrong with people supporting their school or showing school pride, but when it goes over the line, that's uncalled for.

Personally, I've always enjoyed seeing visiting fans from other schools at BG home game (except Toledo of course :) ). Seriously though, why shouldn't visitors hit the road and have a good time doing so. Isn't it fun going on the road for you and I too? Sure it is. I don't even care when visitors cheer a lot, they should. As long as BG wins, I am a happy man. I think its great when sportsmanship is evident in the stadium as well. Sportsmanship doesn't just apply to the players and coaches, it's up to the fans too. Because the players usually aren't the ones who give a schools a bad reputation, it's usually the fans in the parking lots and stands that can make or break a visiting fans perspective.

Have a great time and cheer your team on to victory.....just be respectful in the process of doing it no matter who you are around. Sometimes its hard to not want to say something back. But the team that always gets the last and final word - that means the most - is the team with the most points on the scoreboard.

BG-CMU

Post by Expos79 »

Hey Freak...it's Expos from after the game...it was great to finally meet you and I'm sorry that the Chippewas couldn't have given you guys a better game. We knew coming in that the Bowling Green game wouldn't be easy, but we REALLY needed a win against BG to jump start our program again.

I too was upset with how our fans acted and it seems to get worse every year. The worse our team gets...the more drunk our fans get. I guess the more we lose, the more students turn to alcohol to numb the pain! We've also raised academic admission standards...so I have no explanation for the idiots that you encountered Saturday!

Things were not as bad when I was playing for the Chippewas (and we'd pull in about 20,000 for home games around 1997-98 ), but crummy former coaches, lopsided defeats to Big10 opponents, and consecutive losses to our rival WMU have killed the program the last couple of years. Add to the fact that it's hard to recruit Michigan athletes to come to CMU (when they could go to more successful programs like BG, Michigan State, Toledo), let alone trying to convince them to come to a freezing wind tunnel like northern Michigan, and you've got a recipe for disaster.

I think the jury is still out on our coach. He's a proven winner on the D-2 level, has a strong playbook much like BG's, and he's a much more personal guy than our previous coaches, but it all comes down to how many W's we get. No W's, no fans, no program!
