no cheer presence at cmu?

Did anyone notice any BG cheerleaders at the CMU game? Sorry if this is vague. I'll explain myself later after class. But for those of you who went and any cmu fans peruzing..

They were there, but just in horrible placement. When they aren't right in front of the BG section, it's hard for them to get us going. I know I was starting half the cheers we did with my friends in the front row. I told one of the cheerleaders to get them all to stand on the ledge between the players bench and our stands. They could have easily lined up right there and made more of an impact. While I don't mind sitting right on the 50, it does suck not having the cheerleaders there doing their job right in front of our fans!

I'll probably regret bringing this up here, but i feel pretty strongly against the leadership of our cheer team. For starters I was a cheerleader here for around 2 years. I had worked with the team halfway through my freshmen yr and the last two years i was doing pretty much at everything football and home basketball for bgsu. When i got here the team was very deep and good with talent. Drops and injuries were at a minimum during a tough time for the football team. That was the turn around season for bg football. It was also the turn around season for bgsu cheerleading under then first yr head coach Valerie Faley. The 01-02 yr finished with most of the squad members still. The last 2 years more than half of the cheer team would quit before regular season for basketball arrived. This year the team has lower morale than ever because the coaches have really run the program into the ground. The team is incapable of producing the same exciting crowd pumping things it was able to do just a few yrs ago because the coaches have no control over the team. The problem is few people on the team have respected Val or Jon (coaches). The reason is they are completely unprofessional in everything they do. They don't conduct themselves like coaches at all. This past week at CMU they couldn't bribe enough cheerleaders to go from what i've been told. That marks the first away game BG didn't have it's usual presence of cheerleaders. I realize this isn't critical to how the football team plays, but as we draw larger and larger crowds at perry stadium it's a damn shame we're missing out on the good years of BG cheerleading. Everyone who quit the cheerleading team had their reasons, but it all stems back to unproffessional coaching. I don't believe the team can get better as long as these trends persist, and it appears this year will be another like the last 2 from what i'm hearing from current team members. team members have already quit. When an experience team member leaves the coaches replace them with another person. It isn't hard finding people who are interested. However experience goes a long way in both the teams overall capability, and in the safety of the team because the sport involves girls more than 7 or so feet in the air. Nearly every single cheerleader who has quit or is not part of the team anymore would agree that these coaches need to go, which is at least 25 people or so. Personally, I think the coaches are nice people, but incapable to coach at the collegiate level. I personally quit last yr because when half the team quit before me, the coaches expected me to do too much to make up for their absence for me to maintain my grades. I think this is a problem that caused other people to quit. The coaches had promised a study table both yrs i was involved. However they didn't ever set one up. I'm not the only one who left for academic purposes. Over time i have come to believe that their priority is definitely not to help us sustain academic success. I could harp on and on, but the bottom line for many people who think our stadium has a weak atmosphere is that one of bg's spirit organizations could make a difference in that but can't under the current coaching.
I've always laughed about it because i never took this seriousely but maybe i should. Both coaches are UT cheer alum. Perhaps that explains everything...

I think a strong cheerleading squad is part of the college football experience, much as a great marching band is part of that experience. I was at a high school game recently to see one of our youth group members play and was stunned to see 20 girls on the sidelines leading the cheers. They used a broad array of cheers and flips and really engaged the crowd.

Freak, I'm with you on getting loud by myself, but I don't see the cheerleaders job as actually leading the crowd in cheers (boy, that sounds stupid). They add to the atmosphere and the experience.

If there are some problems with the coaches, it needs to be addressed.

They look good too

Seriously the quality of our Cheerleading squad has gone noticeably down since Erin Norman left. I'm no expert in cheerleading, by any imagination, but it is evident that they aren't as well trained and "crisp" as they used to be.

I will agree, Stormin' Norman brought a lot of fire to the squad from what I could see. Something else I've noticed, no offense if you are one of them truth, is that the guy cheerleaders keep getting smaller. IMO, that has a lot to do with the stunts they perform and how well the perform them. Maybe they are stronger than they really look but with all the drops and such I see, it makes me wonder about that.

I'm def. not one of em small types, but i'm not overly muscular. I have always been the athletic type playin 3 sports in hs(FB, swimming, tennis). Those of us cheer alumns who know erin norman would agree with the fact that she did a better job as far as teaching the sport. Because of all the turnover rate, even some don't know who she is.

Maybe the cheerleaders should make a visit to Diversity Boutique in downtown BG to meet her and convince her to come back and teach them!!!
