Spring Game Observations..............

Post by Falconboy »

The RB's looking good. The O-line seemed okay. The Defense looked better but i'm not sure how much. There where some nice hits by Dozier and others. Dan Macon is the man, he's quite fast to say the least and is way more explosive than our beloved P.J Pope it isnt' funny. Receivers were decent. I like the various play calls such as the qb bootleg fake and rollout. Barnes made good use of this playcall many times. Turner looks like he should be the starter so Barnes could see time at another position if Coach B really does want him starting somewhere. On another RB note Bobby Thomas looks even bigger than last year , around 215-225 possibly. Our RB's look to have plenty of power in their running.

We have to run the ball well this year to be remotely good. The D look fair, had some nice plays but just okay. We'll only see how good they really are on Sept.2,2006 vs Wisky. From what I could tell the O-line handled the D-line most of the time but the D had some very nice plays here and there.

For you all that weren't at the game, you missed the hit of the decade by Dozier.

I thought the defense showed nice intensity. Its hard to judge these games...when the offense scores at will, you don't know if the offense is good or the defense stinks, and vice versa, the other way around, etc.

Having said that, I thought the defense played well. I thought Barnes looked good in spots, but never QB was overwhelmingly good.

The oline did look a little weak, but it seemed like 3 of the lineman were on the sidelines injured, so maybe we weren't at full strength.

There were a lot of sacks, and it seemed like they were coverage sacks or QB holding onto the ball forever sacks, but I'd be interested in what others felt about that.

It was great to be at the Doyt again. Can't wait for the season to start. [/i]

The defense tackled much better than they did last year. On that hit by Dozier the thing that impressed me most was that he didn't just whack him, He whacked him, wrapped and put him down.

Another thing I liked was the pursuit and quickness form the dline. A number of times today a dlineman made the play defending the run at the edge. Last year it was usually the CB or if we were a lucky a LB making that play. The dline also broughtsome good pressure on the QB's. Brady Minturn made a great int on a ball batted down at the line. Frericks, Hardwick, James and Ream also made some nice plays

The secondary looks very strong. Definitely a strength of our defense

I think we'll be OK at LB. Dozier was very physical and active, Terrell White was Terrell White and Cody Basler showed a pretty good nose for the ball.

On offense. turner made some nice throws and he was off on some others...I think he'll be fine this year if he applies himself.

I love Freddie Barnes' athleticism, but the kid just doesn't seem to have the arm strength to play QB . Glaud will be heading up the depth chart pretty quickly this fall if he's as good as he looked on the recruiting video.

Other than that...RB is set with Macon, Thomas and Winovich. Pete is a LOAD. I don't think he went down from the first contact all day. Macon and Thomas both showed the speed to get to the corner and the power to go inside.

WR looks a bit usettled. Partridge made a couple of nice grabs. The TE Schiedler got downfield well for a couple of grabs and Ruben Ruiz made some plays also. This group seems to lack speed, so I hope those burners from FL and/or Pronty come to camp ready this fall because we have a need for some speed at WR.

I'll make a special request to the Merritt Island crew...take good care of Big Bird over the summer. If anything happens to him, we are hurting at PK worse than we were last year.

ya i was joking along with my friends and said that we have to many white recievers because our wr's speed is terrible. you can go out on any given night during the fall and find intramural players that are faster than our recievers lol. I thought kenny lewis did a good job of breaking up some passes, and i cant remember who it was but should of had a pick 6 in the second if they could catch the ball.

Good recap, Flip. Good to see you, the Mrs and "Flipperella" there too! Jake and I had a great time today.

Dozier...that boy is from my neck of the woods....Akron Garfield. I thought he and Cody Basler did a nice job at LB. Parks is a tough kid...he got up after that big hit and went right back to the huddle.

I loved the intensity of the D today...sure, there is work to be done but the group seems eons ahead of last year already. The tackling was MUCH better. The secondary is gonna be great, IMO. They're young but the talent and play making ability is there.
Thank God Big Bird is coming in...Sean should have no problem getting the nod at PK and keeping it for the next 4 years.

It's hard to judge things in this game but I like the excitement the team showed. We have a long way to go but this team seemed to show more desire than last year's team.

Beautiful day for football....brats were great off the grill. Great to hang out with the gang again. BGFan, thanx for the Captain and Coke. LOL

Only 132 days til the real deal.....

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to make it to the spring game, but I did get down to Akron for part of the BG baseball game. Thanks to everyone for their reports from today. Like some of you said, in a game like today when it’s your team playing on both sides of the ball, sometimes it’s hard to get excited or tell if one side is playing well or poor. One thing I wanted to ask though, and I haven’t seen anything posted on it yet which is good, did anyone get injured? Spring games, exhibitions, preseason, etc., the games are always a part of getting ready for the real thing in sports, but I always worry about injuries – aside from the minor bumps and bruises. Hopefully we came out unscathed today.

Here were my thoughts that I posted in another thread. Just thought I'd copy them over here to get them in the proper category.

I don't want to be a hater, but our QBs looked bad. Macon was decent and so was Bobby Thomas. But the line looked shoddy, the WR's were almost non-existent, and Barnes can't throw the ball to save his life. Only two TDs the whole game, one by the first O and one by the second. Patridge was WIDE open down the middle for like a 60 yard TD reception, but I am betting it was a blown coverage as there was no one within 15 yards of him. Luckly, Turner delivered one of his few decent throws of the day.

On the flip side, the defense looks greatly improved. Dozier had a couple of big hits. Too bad we had to move him to LB, because his size is much more suited for safety. Lot of "sacks" as well. Not real sacks since they couldn't tackle the QB, but the DL were in the QBs face almost every pass play. Flipper's favorite Trevor Frericks had a couple of tackles for loss early in the game as well.

I was happy to see our defense look so much better then last year, but vastly disappointed in the QBs.

FWIW, I think the offense beat the defense like 48-35. But as hammb and I discussed, the scoring system was greatly slanted to the offense. The defense should have been getting points for sacks. If they would have, it would have been much closer.

Freak, Parks is a tough kid, but he ain't that tough. He went straight to the sideline, and looked like he wasn't too sure he was headed to the right one.

Good seeing you too, Freak....and The REAL Falcon Fanatic and her husband :D

I was glad to read the following quote from Turner who was a little high on some of his throws...(you know I had to work that in)
He was asked how it felt to be the number one QB and he answered....

"It's a different feeling. Nothings printed in stone and I might not be the number one quarterback. I'm working hard like every other quarterback."

If that's the attitude he's taking towards things this summer and in the fall, I'm confident that he'll be ready to follow in Josh and Omar's footsteps

Yeah, Parks had to take a few downs off. He was walking around the sideline with that "Why are there pink elephants dancing in the forest?" look.

I have to say, I loved the intensity that the defense had today. The guys were having fun and feeding off each other. It seemed like last year the D constantly had their hands on their hips with their heads down. I don't think we'll have to worry about that this year.

But, in my opinion the offense just isn't clicking right now. While some of that is to be expected with as many starters who left, I just don't know if there's someone on the offense who's going to be a leader. I'd love to see LIch step up and take that role. I wouldn't say the offense didn't care, but they did look indifferent about playing today.

After seeing the team today, we could possibly when 7 or 8 games. But if the offense doesn't pull it together, we might only win 3 or 4.

Watch for Glaud in the fall to maybe over take both AT and Freddie he is a big boy and he got the throwing style like omar had and also look for the FR Wideouts to prob be in the mix too.
