What exactly happened with the BG/OU bands?

Discussion of the Falcon football team.

"When that happened some suit from the BG group marched right up to the OU director, pretty funny scene."

Wonder if that may have been Jay Jackson, the BG director? Grant? Any help on that?

That was Doctor Jackson. I believe he went over to have a talk with the OU band director. The OU band director laughed and turned his back on him. From then, it was war that year. And we faced them the following day with the women's game. The band was relatively tame during the women's game so I'm sure there were some words handed down to the OU band.

Now, mind you, at the time BG had one of the best if not THE best band department in the midwest. Doctor Jackson had/has a great personality and was/is as quality an indivual you could meet in a lifetime.

There were instances with the 110 in the Doyt in the mid to early 80's, but those details currently escape me. I believe there was vandalism and some occurances with our rank and file during a performance.

Yes, I hold a grudge and NO I'm not going to get over it.

Many of the unpleasant circumstances with the OU band you speak of are true. However, that is why Ohio University hired a new director for the 110 in 1996. While I'm sure there have been disagreements and small problems over the past 9 years, the new director has done a good job of totally cleaning up the band's act. While they're still exciting to watch they're not a group of totally disrespectful thugs anymore like they were in the 80's and early 90's.

Just sayin'.

I can say I'm really glad to hear that. OU was bad, but at least they weren't Stanford.

Blech.

As far as I know, no one here now really knows/cares about any such grudge with the OU band. They are two different styles of marching bands, and both do what they do very well. If the FMB were going to this, I don't think anyone would care. At least they would probably have the common courtesy of giving us real seats, as opposed to the Bengals this year. Jeff

Flipper, I should tell you of the time when select member of my high school band beat select members of the football team in (tackle) football. It was all friendly.

They weren't used to hitting without their pads. We were. Well that and they couldn't beat the Sisters of Eternal Agony.

We lost our drum major to a broken collar bone, however.
