Springfield pipeline continues

Post by brewer »

Here's an article in the Springfield News-Sun on an OT verbal from Springfield North...

Mahoney will become a Falcon

Thursday, October 21, 2004

The list of schools recruiting North’s Kevin Mahoney to play football was almost as tall as the 6-foot-7 senior lineman.

Bowling Green State University won out in the end.

Mahoney verbally committed to a full-ride football scholarship to play for the Falcons next fall. The national signing day is in February.

“I just liked the coaches up there,” he said. “I went to a game there Saturday (a 51-13 win against Ball State) and the atmosphere up there is crazy. I loved it.”

Bowling Green was just one of several schools vying for the 295-lineman.

“Toledo and Ball State both offered scholarships,” Mahoney said. “Michigan State, West Virginia, Eastern Kentucky, Ohio University, the University of Cincinnati, they were all calling. I was just surprised when I was getting five or six letters a day from colleges all over.”

Mahoney plays both offensive and defensive line for the Panthers. He said the Falcons recruited him as an offensive tackle.

He didn’t know if he would be red-shirted or get to contribute immediately as a freshman.

“I’m guessing I’ll be red-shirting,” Mahoney said. “That’s what most offensive lineman do. It gives you a year to adjust and a year to get bigger.”

Mahoney said the school’s criminal justice program was the winning ingredient.

“That made my decision,” he said.

After Saturday’s visit, Mahoney didn’t want to put the decision off any longer.

“If you like the school there’s no point in waiting for it,” he said.

Mahoney is the first North football player to receive a full-scholarship in football since Ty Myers attended Illinois. Myers graduated from North in 1999.

North coach Jon Rommel also attended Bowling Green.

“He was real excited,” Mahoney said. “It’s his alma mater, how can’t he be excited (about) that?”

The Springfield pipeline continues to flow toward Bowling Green. Current South senior Luke Alexander verbally committed in the summer and South products Mitchell Crossley (2001) and Brandon Curtis (2004) are on the team.

“Since I know a few of them, that kinda helps a little bit. Talking to Luke and talking to Brandon, they both said it was a great school.”

This answers the concern from another thread about the effect of the homecoming crowd on recruiting.

Rivals has him as a mid ** prospect. The kid already benches over 300lbs. That's pretty good for someone his age with arms that long. Hang another 25 lbs of muscle on him and he's the prototypical OT.

Rivals also said his interest in BG was "low"...further proof that the online services don't do such a great job on recruiting outside of the BCS

Crowded O-line????

Post by Falconboy »

Does anybody know how many O-line guys we got for next year and coming in already this year? Seems like were so loaded for years to come at that position. Can't we please entertain the idea of making a guy with this kind of size a DT? :prayer: We are after all very thin there. :|
