Just heard on the radio that Omar is set to sign a deal with the Steelers today. This short article says it is a 3-year deal and it says he will be the number 3 QB behind Big Ben and Charlie Batch. Not really any surprise that he will be the #3, but as a fifth round pick, there are no guarantees.

Omar will probably be the #2 by the end of preseason. I say this not because I'm making some sort of subjective arguement about Omar being better than Batch, but rather that Batch most likely won't stay healthy through training camp.
I'd like to think that Batch might be a decent QB if he'd stay healthy, but staying healthy is part of being a decent QB.
Go Falcons!

I haven't followed Batch's career closely enough to agree or disagree with that statement, but it does strike me as quite bold predicting that a backup QB will be injured before the season starts. Nonetheless, I'd guess that if Batch were to go down with an injury before the season starts, the Steelers would sign a veteran to serve as the backup. I don't believe they'd feel comfortable going into the season with Omar as their #2 QB.mmisbg wrote:Batch most likely won't stay healthy through training camp.

Good for Omar. Glad to hear he's signing and not pulling a Reggie Bush.

There were rumblings about this on the Steelers board I attend, but I discounted them as rumblings and guesses as it is his turn anyway.
As for Batch being unable to make it to the season. i guess quite the opsit. Batch is a very good qb and plays a smart a game, has good mobility and arm strength. I can say that Omars progression in the steelers playbook, from what I have read is better than they expected and that he is grasping the o better than anticipated. i dont see Omar being #2 this year, unless Ben injuries did infact rattle his selfconfidence some how. I see Omar playing very well and earning the respect of the coaches and players and next year Batch being traded or released and Omar taking his spot.

Omar is not going to win the number 2 job unless Batch gets injured. Even if (when) that does happen later this year, Pittsburgh is not going to put Omar on the field unless they think he is ready. I doubt they will feel that way this year.
Basically unless the top 2 QBs get injured the same week, don't expect Omar to get any PT this season.

This is a mirror of posts I saw two years ago about Ben, only diff is people were saying "we wouldnt have picked him up in the 1st rd if wasnt any good" Omar doesnt have that extra leverage. A reminder though is when madox went down and Batch was hurt is how Ben got the job as soon as he did. It could happen for Omar, esp since Pit is opening up the O this year with more passing....It will be a huge difference you know instead of 50-50 itll be lilke 56-44....as we all know Pit will pound it out on the ground when they have nice lead.Jacobs4Heisman wrote:Omar is not going to win the number 2 job unless Batch gets injured. That "only difference" means the world in the NFL. The Steelers are not going to entrust a SB-defending team with a chance to go back to a 5th rounder unless they are caught in the most dire circumstance i.e. Ben and Batch tying a pregame tandem Russian Roulette match.MACMAN wrote:This is a mirror of posts I saw two years ago about Ben, only diff is people were saying "we wouldnt have picked him up in the 1st rd if wasnt any good" Omar doesnt have that extra leverage. Comparing the Roethlisberger phenomenon to anything past, present, or future is ridiculous because his situation and subsequent performance was an extreme outlier. That's like saying all 5th and 6th round QB draft picks are going to be stars because Tom Brady was.
I think Omar getting on the field this year would be very bad for his NFL future, even if he would be surrounded by a very good team. I don't think he's ready to perform in the NFL.
