New Clock Rules
New Clock Rules
I didn't see this discussed anywhere else, so I will pose the question. Now that a week of college football is in the books, what is everyone's opinion on the new clock rules (start on kickoff and spot on change of possession)? I personally think the rules benefit us against schools like Wisconsin, but overall I can't stand the rules because they further cut into gameplay time. I hope the NCAA comes up with something better after this season to reduce the overall time of games.

I like them. I hated them at 1st but after watching it for a week its not bad at all. 1. It takes a few plays out of the game, but most of them our kneel downs or unimportant anyway. 2. It gives a slight benefit to smaller, underdog teams like ourselves which I like. 3. It allows more time for every single play to be reviewed by the booth, WHICH I LOVE! 4. Teams like Purdue, Louisville, Texas were still able to score 50-60 points with ease. 5. The excessive injuries to student athletes is thee worst part about college footbal right now, this should marginally cut down on this. 6. It gives more of an advantage to the team that can control the ball and time of possession (which IMO is the team that deserves to win for the most part). There are other reasons, but that is a solid 6 on how I went from hating it more than anyone alive, to thinking not only is it OK, its pretty darn good!
4th & 13 on PU 32yd line.. 56,000 fans up on their feet screaming, i held my breath the entire play trying to make as little noise as possible.. wouldnt u know Sharon would make the biggest touchdown catch in the history of BG Football, FALCON UP!

I will wait until the end of the season before I chime in here. The reason given for the rule change was to keep the games inside the 3 hour TV time block. I want to see if what really happened was more commercials were sold and more money maid by the NCAA.

big mistake and realy hurt the game, esp the suspens that has been the end of the game...if they wanted to change any sport they should have changed Basket ball where by a foul in the last 2 min would cause a player to be ejected from the game. to speed up Basket ball.
But football was fine and this not good for the game.

The new rules are absolutely TERRIBLE. If you want to start the clock after the ball is spotted on possession changes for most of the game, that's fine, but once you're inside the 5:00 mark of a half, they should revert to stopping it (similar to how OOB works).
Last night's Miami game was a perfect example. They punted and had all their timeouts left. However, now FSU could let the clock run on the punt, and after 1st, 2nd, and 3rd downs. So basically you need 4 TOs to stop the clock if you are trying to make a defensive stand. The old rules would've given Miami the ball with about 1:45 left, instead it was about 1:10. That sucks a lot of the drama out of the game, IMO.
I really think that rule is total crap, but that's just me.

It did work against Miami in last nights game, but that doesnt make the rule terrible. As much as I hate FSU, they deserved to win the game. Miami still got the ball back with more than a minute to spare. Thats PLENTY of time to get a TD for a win or FG for a tie. It certainly didnt suck the drama out of the game for me, it just made each possession more valuable and more important. Instead of the traditional the last team with the ball wins.

Are you talking about the "Unintentional Intentional" foul? My God, how can it not be intentional when everyone knows someone is gonna' foul?MACMAN wrote:...if they wanted to change any sport they should have changed Basket ball where by a foul in the last 2 min would cause a player to be ejected from the game. to speed up Basket ball.
