Turners grade so far
How would you grade the A train so far?
C+. He's handled the offense decent, but I really need to see him pass the ball MUCH more effectively.

I think we should have an open competition because that will keep Turner motivated to keep getting better in teh offseason. Ultimately i still see turner starting for us next year, but hell, why are we even talking about next year! Lets talk about the here and now! Go Falcons!

Turner's competition will be from Sheehan and any other outstanding QB's we might recruit. Barnes' place is in the 'p' formation. Turner gets a c+/b- so far. His passing, though markedly improved, still leaves something to be desired. A good run offense can't work without the pass to keep the defense honest.MatelaAntwerp wrote:Turner seems like the man for the test of the year. Are we Ok with Turner as our starter for the next two seasons? Or should we have an open competition in camp with Sheehan and Glaud involved?
Yeah right girl!

Next year's depth chart will likely be Turner-Glaud-Sheehan.
The only reason I put Sheehan third is because they will likely try to redshirt him to save him a year. If there should be a scenario where we need to look at a new QB long term Sheehan most likely peels that redshirt.
Why talk about it now?
Why not?

I guess I'm a tougher grader than the rest of you, but to me C is average. When I see everybody giving grades in the B range, I just cannot agree. To me my grading scale:
A -- All conference consideration
B -- Above Average QB play
C -- Average
D -- Below Average
F -- Failure
Based on my scale I would give him no better than a D+. I think his play on the field has been average, to slightly below average this season, but I DO count against him for missing the UW game. To me that was like him sleeping late and missing our first exam of the season. If he were hurt, no penalties, but to get yourself suspended, I think counts against you.
Since coming onto the field he has struggled at times and made plays at times. Bonus points for how well he played in OT of the Buffalo game, he was lights out in the OTs. Most of the rest of the time, however, he has really struggled going through his progressions and making the throws. He consistently waits for his WRs to finish their routes and come open, a good QB needs to anticipate where that guy is going to come open, before he actually does. This has resulted in a lot of passes that are just delivered late. There have been a number of pump fakes, then he throws into the same read. That is telling me that he is seeing things right, but is not having the confidence to deliver the ball on time. You can see some tentativeness in some of his throws as well, as they lack the necessary zip. This past weekend he was given plenty of time in the pocket and still had happy feet and was dancing around back there, another sign that he is playing with some tentativeness right now.
On the whole he has played like a RS SO, which isn't a bad thing, necessarily, but he does need to learn from these mistakes. If he watches the film and starts seeing things quicker and delivering the ball with confidence in his reads I think he'll be okay. If he continues to play tentative he'll never develop into the player we need him to be. I like his overall skillset in that he is physically capable of throwing good balls, and he seems to have decent running instincts (although he's clearly favoring that shoulder).
AT has certainly not played well enough, in my mind, to annoint him the unquestioned starter going into next season. He absolutely is the leader for the job, and somebody would have to dethrone him, but if I were coach I wouldn't make that outside the realm of possibility. Freddie will never be a QB, but if Sheehan or Glaud study hard in the offseason and prove they are better passers than Turner, so be it.
