I respect your opinion, Kurt, and I realize that he did a lot for this program. But it seems like every time he metions BG to the media, it's in some way derogatory and I get tired of it. He's a great coach, no doubt, but he needs to be more aware of what he's saying and how he's saying it because he's not doing us any favors when he mentions BG.gerl4 wrote:I like to get on this website a few times a week and read what all of you have to say. There has only been a few things that have prompted me to post a remark or two, this happens to be one of them.
I played for Urban my senior year and I can say without a doubt that he is the best thing that has happened to BG in the past 15 years. Without him BG could still be where it was when I attended the school for my first 4 years.
Was I upset when he decided to leave? Absolutely. It was obviously the best move for him, his family, and his coaching staff. He has since become a top five coach in America and would do anything for a former player. He keeps in contact with me to this day and is always reminiscing about our days at Bowling Green. For anyone on this link to think that he doesn't care about BG or the people and friends here made here are crazy. We should be proud that he made his start at our school and that we all had a chance to see him coach.
If somone told you that if you left bowling green you would coach for the national championship in 4 years, all while having your family set for LIFE, having coach Gonzales's kids SET, Mullen SET, Drayton SET, Hevesy SET...would you go? KNowing that you left a program in 10 times better shape than it was when you arrived? Is there even a question? When he left the staff that stayed all got promotions, Beckman went to coach for a National Championship. Do you think that he would have gotten an opportunity to coach at O state with another 2-9 season under Blackney? Everyone benefitted from coach Meyer being here. SEBO center? I saw those plans drwan up on HIS desk my senior year.
I know that I am very proud to have met him and played for him, you all should be proud that he got his start at OUR school.
With all that said, we should all pull for that guy, because like it or not he put BG back on the college football map.

I started this thread, so I guess I'll chime in some more...No one is denying what Urban did while he was here. I don't hink he "built" the program, (you don't build a program in two years) but he definitely got it off of life support. I don't think it's a stretch to say he saved football here. I cannot imagine the straits we would have found ourselves in had we hired a guy who came in and failed.
I also don't have a problem with him leaving...I changed jobs within the same industry three times in 15 months because competitors kept waving more $$ at me. You do what you have to do for your family.
I think he could have handled his departure much better than he did.
I also think he could have commented on Smith and Ginn with a great deal more tact. Why not just say something like "We were after them at BGSU, but it's nearly impossible to beat the Buckeyes for in state kids".
I don't think Urban Meyer owes us anything more than we owe him. We owe him simple courtesy and respect. He showed us neither in this instance....

Kurt, you have the respect of the Falcon Flock. Thanks for your perspective. I agree that he brought BGSU a lot of success and attention.
I think we feel like we gave him the chance as a head coach and when he left the nest, we want him to remember us fondly.
We are a prickly bunch, especially when we have to listen to TOSU forever and ever.
Therefore, I take BACK the Blimp Crash, and will cheer for Florida. If #4 says he still is ok, then hey- who am I to say anything different.
So send the Blimp to TOSU side!

Living here in Michigan I have had to hear all of the Bs in regards to Urban and him "campaigning" for his team. The people I work with obviously know that I played for him, so I am naturally the person they will come to and vent on.
I think that Urban is a different person with his players behind closed doors than he is with the media. I also think that he would do ANYTHING for his players success. There were many times when I played when he would come into the meeting room and say "ok, you're going to read or hear about things that I say in the media, etc. don't believe them, believe what we say behind these doors. Things I might say or do is done for a reason". He is a guy who doesn't believe in luck. He believes everything someone get's is deserved, he believe a ball bounces in your favor because you either earned it or you didn't. He DEMANDS accountablility on everyone he interacts with. He made it so that every player on that team wouldn't dare miss an assignment...not in fear of what he'd say, but rather what my teammates would say. He made it so the last thing we wanted to do was dissappoint my teammate. And when 11 guys are accountable for there responsibilities, the ball will bounce in your favor.
Did he campaign?...probably but it was all for a reason, because he is held accountable by his players to do whatever it is neccessary to do right by them. I mean if I played for Loyd Carr right I would be Pissed. Why can't my caoch do whatever he can do to get me in that game. If I'm at Florida and my caoch didn't do what coach Meyer did I'd ticked with him as well. He did what he had to do so his players could live out there dream. Who can blame the guy for that?

Guys,
I'm not directing this at anyone, I'm just talking aloud. I just see him getting Sh*t on alot in here and I thought it was unjust. Take what I say with a grain. I just thought I'd show my perspective on things. Thanks boys.

I just think what Kurt said above here deserves highlighting so that it sinks in. And then take a moment to think of the things Brandon says to the media and ponder whether someone that coached under/with Urban could possibly have the same mentality when it comes to media interactions.gerl4 wrote:I think that Urban is a different person with his players behind closed doors than he is with the media. Yes, it is possible. But Brandon's comments often contradict each other and are so out of left field that they just sound like excuses. Meyer always seems to be lobbying for something. And Meyer's has a different intensity about him. Brandon may be trying to do it, but he is trying too hard and it comes off wrong.UK Peregrine wrote:I just think what Kurt said above here deserves highlighting so that it sinks in. There's probably a lot of truth in that, UK...
I would also like to point out that this has been a really good discussion...peole have been able to disagree without getting disagreeable and we even had a former player chime in with an inside perspective to lend some depth.
We need to do more of this...

Kurt, the obligatory "I respect what you did as a player and what you meant to Falcon football" goes without saying. Like a couple others, however, I still have a major problem with Meyer's remarks.
He can serve as Godfather to the child of every former player, but that's immaterial. What we're talking about is the fact that he goes out of his way to publicly disparage and demean the alma mater of those players, not to mention the athletic department that put his no-name, position coach face on the map to begin with.
He won some games with a talented group of players already on hand like he was paid to do, but he didn't come close to a championship and left after getting smoked by Toledo. The job wasn't finished (and still isn't finished BTW), and he deceived a large number of people who supported him in this regard.
The next time you see him, pass the word that classless jibes are unappreciated and only serve to worsen his deepening reputation as a cold, callous mercenary.
It pains me to say this, but Go Buckeyes. Jim Tressel shows far more respect to the BG football program than Urban Meyer ever has.

Joe,
There are a few ways you can read what he said. If he said it sarcastically like, they are a little better than Bowling Green...wink wink. Than I see your point. But if he was saying it literally, than I don't see the issue. You are talking about the Heisman Trophy winner. If he's saying "these guys are a little better than Bowling Green", and he's being dead serious...I have no issue. They are better than 7 schools in every conference in America.
I think that because he left the way that he left everyone takes everything he does very personally. Instead we should be loving the fact that Bowling Green gets mentioned in virtually every article written about the guy and we are on Stat pages during games on ESPN. That stuff goes a long way guys.

I really don't understand the anomosity towards Urban for the way he left BG. He really is in a no-win situation. He says he's not looking or considering another school's offer because he cares about the school he is currently employed at. Hell yes, I'd like him, or any other coach is his position, to come out and be honest and say"I considering another offer but I am not sure I will take it." But that will never happen. What does that do to the recruiting of his current school? What message does that send to his players, athletic director and assistant coaches, if he stays with his current team? He has to play it that way!
Coaches will always deny rumors until they have a job offer in hand. I understand that. That's just the life of a mid-major program with a winning coach...in any sport. Let's get off Urban's back and appreciate the contributions he made to our program. I will be routing for Ohio State but if Florida wins I can take pride in the fact that Urban has BG roots.

Some of you guys are muddying the waters of the issue at hand a bit. Regardless of how he left BG, or how well he did while he was here, he has seemingly gone out of his way to slam BG numerous times since he left. Maybe he's not doing so intentionally, but that would be a really bizarre string of things to say that all were perceived incorrectly. In any event, perception is reality, and the perception of BG for a lot of people down south is not a good one because of the things Urban says about us.
He could've won ten national championships here and then left in the most gracious manner possible, and it still wouldn't change the face that he often acts with little class towards the school that gave him his break. I think that's unacceptable, and I think he deserves every bit of flack he receives for it.
I don't care if he's speaking the truth, he could be a little less of a dick about it.

Love the coach , have no respect for the person. Urban is basically Nick Saban #2 and in 2-3 years you'll see what I mean.
