Exactly. Jackson was a recruit that Ole Miss wanted and I hear nothing of him on the 2 deep at linebacker. He was 6'2 and alread 230lbs as a freshman so he's probably bigger now , so has the size for LB postion no question , but what gives? I'm sick of this moving safties to LB just for the sake of trying to get speed on the field. Reallly good speed is needed for the secondary but not necessarly for LBs IMO. LB's take on TE's and Tackles during a game and need beef and strenght to take on a block and get around it. Every stinkn' year we see the result of 215lb safties moved to linebacker trying in vain to make get off blocks from TE's and fullbacks for B10 teams or any decent running team in the Mac.moneymaker02 wrote:I also wonder how brandon jackson and eugene fells are doing.
GB keeps talking about speed , speed and we need to get more speed on the field. Yeah, I like great speed as much as the next guy , but what makes a great defensive player usually is his ability to anticipate where to be and strengh and power to take on blockers and push them out of his way or rolll off them. When our "linebackers" try to get off a Te's/FB's block they're usually getting manhandled and presto the rb has free running lanes left and right. Just anyone re-watch the BG-Wisky game tape or BG-OSU or anyother game we had vs a good running team and watch what happens to our LB's when they they get into decent position.
So although speed is important at certian positions like secondary or receiver, your front 7 has to be very physical. In fact most of LB's last year vs Wisky couldn't even take down PJ Hill one on one and thats simply something that every real good LB that s worth his salt should be able to do. Ok, enough rambling , flame away as always.
