On Our Way To Being a Top Program

Post by Columbus_Zak »

Just realized this morning that BG is going to end up being on TV 8 times this season. I cannot imagine that any other team in Ohio, except OSU is televised this often. This exposure is almost certainly going to have an effect on recruiting.

Kudos to our coaching staff, they've made the most of this exposure. We have a high flying offense and a menacing defense. Whatsmore, they beat Minnesota on TV, very nearly beat a good Michigan State side on TV, and are likely to upset Boston College this week. It's all just very positive.

I read a quote somewhere from Joe Novak where he commented on the amount of exposure NIU was getting and how it helped with recruiting.

Novak was sitting in the house of a QB recruit from Houston and asked the kid why he wanted to go to NIU. The student told him he turned on the TV and saw NIU play seven or eight times the previous year and never saw Rice or Houston on TV.

I definitely believe the opportunity to appear on television helps us out. I know others are not fans of Tuesday or Wednesday night football (and I agree that ESPN is at fault) but ESPN has given us some prime time exposure that we could never afford to pay for on our own.

Not to mention the B10 network. Because of them we now have a MAC game of the week!

I really think the Big 10 network is going to help the MAC immensely in terms of exposure.

In one regard it now gives us a medium to ensure that every OOC game we play against a Big 10 team is now televised (unlike the '03 Purdue game, for instance).

It also takes a major source of games away from ESPN/ABC and they will look to the non-BCS conferences to fill that void in programming.

I think the Big 10 network will help us a lot in getting more games on ESPN/ABC, and doing them in traditional timeslots, instead of the weeknight games.

Also, if the B10 network ends up being a success, I think we can expect to see SEC, PAC10, Big12, ACC channels possibly down the road.

Until the MAC gets its own channel, I say bring on these conference channels. The more games on TV for BG the better.

The SEC is already working on it. They'll be the next one to debut their own channel.

In addition to the TV exposure I don't think we can discount the type of offense we're running. Players watching that are quick and athletic are really going to look at the set up and think about what a joy it would be to play that way. If we can finish strong this year, which I fully expect, I think we'll have a banner recruiting class this offseason.

I really hope the B10 network asks thier fanbase to cough up about 120 bucks for a season football ticket or the like. People will pay for it. then this will pave the way for team specific "TV season tickets" some thing that is long over due./

I already believe that BG's recruiting is on the rise. We have commits from some outstanding linemen and a great QB/Ath. Who knows what else is out there that no one knows. I'm excited for BG football, NOW and in the FUTURE!
